    The Petersburg High School track and field team kicked off their regular season schedule last weekend in Ketchikan, and the boys and girls both earned third place finishes. PHS had almost 35 athletes make the trip, but they were still the second smallest school at the meet. Sitka had 25 girls competing, compared to only 11 for Petersburg, but the Vikings still managed to stay close in team scores.     The Petersburg High School baseball team took the field for their first games of the season last Monday night in a doubleheader against Juneau-Douglas High School. The Vikings dropped both games, losing 8-1 in the first game, and having the second game called after five innings with the Crimson Bears up 14-4. In game one, Petersburg went up against JDHS starter Bryce Swofford, a junior, who PHS head coach Jim Engell says is one of the best pitchers in the conference.   • Cancer survivor Kyle joins the battle of the bald

    Kyle Hagerman's father, Karl, likes to refer to him as "well adjusted." Kyle is soft-spoken, humble about his intelligence and a cancer survivor. Although he only has one, maybe two, memories about the battle with cancer he fought and won. Kyle was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia one week after turning two years old.   • Trash cans showcase civic pride in Petersburg

    Karen Hofstad has a collection of a couple hundred or so seafood related cans and labels that would make fishing industry historians salivate. The majority of the collection represents the salmon industry and canneries throughout Alaska, including Kodiak, Petersburg and Wrangell, and they are the inspiration for trash cans worthy of a framed photograph.     Over 50 band and choir students participated in the Region V Music Festival in Ketchikan last weekend, and the results show the PHS music program led by director Matt Lenhard continues to improve. The event brought groups from all over Southeast together and focuses on celebrating the region's close-knit music community.     Nine Petersburg High School students traveled to Skagway earlier this month for the annual art event known as Art Fest. The event was held April 7-10 and open to high school students throughout Southeast. Over 80 students gathered in Skagway, a destination not really known for hosting regional events.     NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center says there should be above normal temperatures during the summer months of June, July and August, and equal chances for normal precipitation.     The North End Ferry Authority is prepared to resume ferry service on Friday, after shutting down for the winter due to low customer traffic. The Rainforest Islands Ferry will complete four weekly trips from Coffman Cove to Banana Point with the M/V Rainforest Islander.   • Sitka sac roe herring season closes early

    The Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery closed for the season a little sooner than expected last week, without meeting the quota set by Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG). The preliminary total harvest for the season is approximately 10,000 tons, which leaves about 4,700 of the guideline harvest level (GHL) unharvested, according to a ADFG news release. The reason for the early closure on March 29 was test samples showing an increasing mix of smaller herring. The result of smaller herring is a decreased value of addition harvest. On...

It was the team's first time partaking in the Big C Relays, an event put on by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.     The motivation for making quilts to give to local veterans came to Carol Kandoll while watching a video during a Quilts of Valor Foundation fundraiser.     The last time a Petersburg High School cheer team went to the state competition was eight years ago, but this year's squad qualified and performed well enough to get people talking at the season finale.     Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD) responded to a fire call Sunday afternoon near Rory's Road at Papke's Landing, 10 miles south of town. The fire destroyed a 24-foot trailer home on the property being used as an office and led to a manufactured home sustaining significant damage, according to PVFD spokesman Dave Berg.     Herring seiners from Petersburg headed to Sitka Sound last week after the sac roe herring fishery went on two-hour notice. The notice was released last Thursday morning at 11 a.m. Prior to the notice, Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) was busy sampling herring and conducting aerial surveys of the area waiting for the sac roe to reach the right maturity to open the fishery.     The Petersburg soccer team traveled to Juneau for a tournament held on March 11-13, and brought home third place. All of the opponents for Petersburg were from Juneau.     Southeast Alaska Power Agency (SEAPA) board of directors held a special board meeting telephonically to approve a budget increase and construction contract. During a February meeting in Wrangell the board discussed the possibility of completing the Swan-Tyee Intertie Helicopter Pad Project in FY2016.
