    Viking volleyball continued their domination of 2A division opponents at the South Seeding Tournament last weekend in Wrangell. The girls went 5-0, winning every set they played, and only allowing opponents to score more than 10 points in four sets. Matches were best of three sets, due to Wrangell only having one court.     Last Friday was the last day at work for Brittany Zenge, the latest director of the Clausen Museum. It's been just over a year since Zenge moved to town after graduating from Monmouth College in her home state of Illinois.   • Mitkof Island timber sale blocked by environmental groups

    Last month, the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) agreed to withdraw their plans to harvest over 28 million board feet from designated sites on Mitkof Island by use of helicopters. The proposed logging sites, located south of Petersburg, were stretched out among just over 4,100 acres. The withdrawal comes after five environmental groups brought a lawsuit against the USFS to block the sale.     The Sons of Norway Hall has given Jill Williams plenty of good times and fond memories during her lifetime.     Petersburg swimmers traveled to Sitka last weekend for Regionals, and two of the team’s strongest qualified for State this weekend in Anchorage.     Petersburg High School wrestlers traveled to Ketchikan last weekend for the Bill Weiss Invitational, but only a handful of the squad made the trip. Six wrestlers participated in the event, the rest stayed home because they were feeling under the weather due to illness or were injured.   • Bed tax revenues up during summer despite ferry setbacks

    The summer results are in for taxable income received by the Borough from charter boat services, retail stores, hotels and bed and breakfasts. The bed tax figures continued to increase for the third straight year growing over $8,000 from 2013 to 2015, and just over $3,000 from 2014 to 2015. This year brought in $43,884 from visitors staying in Petersburg establishments from May to the end of October.     Petersburg volleyball traveled to Juneau to participate in an All Comers Tournament last weekend, and the Varsity and C-team both brought home tournament championships. The Varsity squad went undefeated in seven matches, adding to their winning streak from the previous weekend when they went 6-0.     The 39th Annual Oktoberfest Artshare was held last weekend, and the theme this year was "Christmas Magic." Around 54 vendors participated in the event, and event coordinators Naomi Welde and Cathy Harris dressed up in costumes for the 14th year in a row.     The radiology department at Petersburg Medical Center (PMC) recently purchased a new x-ray machine in order to continue offering reliable service for patients. Liz Bacom, PMC Laboratory/Imaging Director says the old machine was obsolete after being used for about 15 years. Finding replacement parts started to become difficult, in addition to time spent servicing the machine which created problems for some patients. PMC purchased the new machine for $100,000.
