The Petersburg High School girls basketball team are the 2015-16 2A Alaska State Champions. A 3-0 record in last weekend's tournament with wins over Dillingham, Nenana, and Bristol Bay clinched the Lady Vikings' first state title in program history. The Petersburg boys' basketball team went 1-2 and claimed sixth place at the annual Clarke Cochrane Christmas Classic in Ketchikan, however valuable experience was gained. This experience began early in the tournament, as PHS matched up with Auburn Mountainview, Wash., which has two players committed to play Division 2 at Western Oregon. The Lady Viking's speed was a prominent reason for their three consecutive victories against Wrangell, Haines, and Cordova en route to a first-place tournament finish. The Vikings began Thursday's game with Wrangell on a 16-0 run and went into halftime leading 23-5, with many buckets coming in transition.
