Viking Swim Club (VSC) ended its season ended last weekend at the Junior Olympics meet in Anchorage. Swim clubs from across Alaska send their top swimmers to compete in this championship. Peter Kowalski, Rylan Wallace, Abel Aulbach and Shania Dahlberg represented Petersburg at the meet. Vikings baseball hosted a season opening series against Thunder Mountain, Craig and Wrangell over the weekend. Track and field kicked off their season in Ketchikan with an unusual meet last weekend. The Lady Vikings ended their season in Ketchikan last week at the Region V 3A/4A Tournament. Petersburg’s girls started tournament play on Wednesday with a game against Craig. The girls started out the game a little slow according to Lady Viking Head Coach Dino Brock. The Vikings played their final home series of the season against the Metlakatla Chiefs last weekend. The Vikings pillaged the court during Friday night’s first quarter, outscoring the Chiefs 17-8. The Lady Panthers of Craig came to town to face the Lady Vikings last weekend in the girls’ last home series of the season. On Friday the Craig ladies jumped out to an early lead and managed to maintain the lead throughout the game. The Vikings had an outstanding weekend of boys basketball in Wrangell. Friday’s varsity game started with a first half where neither team really controlled the tempo of the game. In 1945, the Alaska state legislature signed the Anti-Discrimination Act into law, and began an era of improved racial relations in the state. Civil rights leader Elizabeth Peratrovich was instrumental in this bill’s passage and her work is celebrated across the state on February 16, Elizabeth Peratrovich Day, the anniversary of the signing of the Anti-Discrimination Act.
