Soccer players in Petersburg began an exciting new tradition earlier this month. For the first time ever, a group, many of whom have been playing soccer together for over ten years at the Community Gym, formed a co-ed Petersburg team and travelled to Juneau to compete in the Shamrock Invitational Indoor Soccer Tournament. Vikings girls basketball started out the competition season with a weekend on the road against a perennial powerhouse, the Lady Braves of Mt. Edgecumbe. The Petersburg girls have a lot of fresh faces with eight out of the 13 girls traveling to Sitka being freshmen. The Vikings played their first basketball game of the season last weekend in Ketchikan. It was an endowment game, which means it won’t count toward either team’s season record. “The game started out a little rough for us,” said Vikings head coach Rick Brock. The Region V Baseball Championships continued on Thursday for the Vikings after an 8-3 loss to Thunder Mountain moved Petersburg into the tournament’s loser’s bracket. The two-day Track and Field State Championship was held last weekend at Lathrop High School in Fairbanks, with Petersburg athletes scoring points in four events. Diane Murph ran in the 3200-meter race, she was seeded in 8th going into the event and that’s where she finished. “She worked as hard as she could. Vikings baseball swept a home series against Craig, Wrangell, and Juneau JV last weekend. The first game, against the Juneau JV on Thursday, was a six to five Vikings win. Colby Bell started on the mound for Petersburg through the first four innings and gave up only three hits and four runs, and struck out eight Juneau batters. Last week the Petersburg music program travelled to Sitka to perform in the annual Southeast Music Fest. “This was one of the best festivals in my 14 years of experience,” said Petersburg’s director Matt Lenhard. “All the groups were very prepared and it translated to a confident performance, with a very good program. The track and field team traveled to Juneau last weekend to face off against some tough 4A schools as well at Sitka and Craig, perennial powerhouses in the 3A division. The Girls team ended up in fourth place and the boys came in sixth. Viking Swim Club (VSC) ended its season ended last weekend at the Junior Olympics meet in Anchorage. Swim clubs from across Alaska send their top swimmers to compete in this championship.
