    Petersburg played host to Sitka, Thunder Mountain and Craig over the weekend for the Viking's first home competition. The Viking Swim Team began Friday with the women's 200 yard medley relay and the Petersburg girls finished first with the team of Grace Weller, Shania Dahlberg, Shalie Dahl and Eva Kowalski.   • $18,000 worth of heroin confiscated

    United States Postal Inspector Adam Henney, Petersburg Police Investigator Kalin Rosse and the Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs (SEACAD) intercepted approximately 19.93 grams of heroin as it was being mailed into the community. In a statement made by the Petersburg Police Department, an ongoing investigation produced a package with slightly less than one ounce of heroin addressed to Jeff Kyle Smith, 49, of Petersburg.     Amyee Peeler of Inga's Galley hosted the Color Splash Run Friday to help fund the Klondike Road Relay that will include runners Emil Rucker, Dana Christensen, Amyee Peeler, Erin Watkins, Joe Viechnicki, John Viechnicki, Monica Gross, Tess Abbott, Maria Wimmer and Carin Christensen this season.     A tentative list of all recommendations for the 2013 capital projects list was released to the Petersburg City Council during its regular meeting Tuesday evening. This is the first step in the process of generating a list for the upcoming state legislative session.     Members of the Petersburg Lutheran Church traveled to Caugas, Puerto Rico in June on a mission trip.   • Collision lands local boys in hospital

    Two Petersburg boys, Dylan Barger, 14, and Matthew Bray, 14, were injured after the moped they were riding collided with a vehicle on 3rd and Excel Streets. The moped was reported to have no brakes and they hit the vehicle at approximately 30 miles per hour.     The Petersburg Viking volleyball team played host to Sitka and the varsity girls shut out all games this past weekend. The Vikings team consists of 14 freshmen, one junior and 10 seniors.     The local ballot is now set for the Petersburg elections. There is no contest for the City Council, for the second year in a row with one council seat with no candidates. Petersburg Mayor Al Dwyer states he will not seek office again and may resign after this October's city election. Dwyer is half-way through his third two-year term as mayor.     Members of the Local Boundary Commission finalized their decision that Petersburg's Borough plan meets state requirements. Voters in the proposed borough area will have the final say.     Petersburg hosted the 2012 Region V Jamboree for the first time.     The Petersburg men's and women's cross-country teams put their running shoes to the road in Sitka for the first meet of the season Friday, Aug. 24. The women placed seventh overall out of nine teams beating Craig and Sitka and the men placed last in 10th place.     A new state prosecutor has found a place in Petersburg. The Department of Law has assigned Assistant District Attorney Nick Polasky, who works out of Juneau to this position.
