    Orin Pierson|Jan 9, 2025

The Petersburg Borough Assembly unanimously passed a resolution on Monday to transfer seven parcels of borough-owned land in the Airport Addition Subdivision to Tlingit Haida Regional Housing Authority (THRHA) in exchange for the development of 11 residential lots, a project that builds on a successful 1996 partnership between the organizations. "About 25 years ago, PIA allocated federal housing monies to the Tlingit and Haida Housing Authority, and in the partnership with the assembly, several...

  • New Year's Eve light show

    Jan 9, 2025

It was a new moon on New Year's Eve and the Kp index – which is a measure of geomagnetic activity in the Earth's atmosphere – was forecasting an eight out of nine, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. Add a clear night sky to the recipe and you get a visual feast for Petersburg's stargazers who rang in the new year with a truly extraordinary aurora show....

  • Zero snowpack on Petersburg's high ground after abnormal weather

    Olivia Rose, KFSK Radio|Jan 9, 2025

Petersburg started the year nearly snowless, even at high elevations - and that's rare, according to long-term data records. Snowpack data is collected at hundreds of sites in Alaska every winter month for the National Resource Conservation Service's snow survey program, which monitors snow depth and water content measurements to use for environmental forecasting and water management. There are several snow survey stations in Southeast Alaska - including two on Petersburg's Mitkof Island, which...

Rock-N-Road’s $2,090,300 bid came in well below a competing $2.9 million bid and the engineer’s initial estimate for the project of $2.56 million. Funding for this project has already been secured by the borough through a loan from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation Alaska Clean Water Fund. Petersburg voters...

    Jan 9, 2025

It has been a very busy year filled with lots of successes. I hope all have had great and joy filled holidays, and I wish for you each a very happy and safe celebration as we welcome in the new year. Below is a brief summary of many of the accomplishments achieved in 2024 and a few things I am looking forward to working on in 2025. January started off with huge transitions after a record-breaking voter turnout and a resignation resulted in five, out of seven, new Council members being seated. The Council has been filled with seven citizens...

  • To the Editor

    Jan 9, 2025

United we stand, divided we fall. To the Editor: I am moved as I watch the solemn funeral proceedings of former President Jimmy Carter in the magnificent rotunda of our nation’s Capital today, January 7, four years and one day removed from the disgraceful desecration of this historic place, the violence against law enforcement, and the attempts to physically harm lawmakers doing their Constitutionally mandated duty – to formalize the results of a free and fair election. Let us NEVER forget the heinousness of January 6, and let us stand str...

  • Vikings lose on the road to Craig Panthers

    Aiden Luhr|Jan 9, 2025

Heading into their first road and conference games this past weekend against Craig, the Vikings looked to carry their momentum after their win against Sitka. Much like their first matchup against Sitka, the Vikings were plagued by a slow start, falling 11-4 in the first quarter. "I think our confidence in ourselves is not as high as it should be. When you play somebody who believes in themselves – both scenarios we got down right away in double figures and that kinda held throughout the rest of...

  • Lady Vikings unable to keep pace in season opener against Craig Panthers

    Aiden Luhr|Jan 9, 2025

The Lady Vikings began their season last weekend on the road against the Craig Panthers. Heading into the matchup, the Panthers were undefeated (2-0) and had the home crowd and momentum on their side – using both to their advantage and getting out to a fast start, leading 15-8 after quarter one of game one. The second quarter was marked by seven Lady Vikings turnovers due to the physicality and aggression of the Panther’s defense, leading to transition points. “[Craig is] a fast team, scrappy and physical. I think we got out there and the p...

  • Entrepreneur proposes greenhouses, water bottling plant at 6-Mile

    Larry Persily|Jan 9, 2025

WRANGELL — The mayor convened the public workshop, inviting Washington state-based entrepreneur Dale Borgford to lay out for borough officials his plans to build biomass boilers that would burn trash from around Southeast to heat large commercial greenhouses at the site of the former 6-Mile mill. He also wants to build a plant capable of filling large plastic bottles with 40,000 gallons a day of clean water from a creek at the north end of the property, or from rainwater if the creek flow is insufficient. And his list includes a plant to turn f...

The application process closes on January 17. This investment supports licensed home and center-based programs across Alaska to address their needs and strengthen child care systems statewide. Since the launch of the application portal, about half of all licensed child care providers have applied. “We want to ensure all child care providers are aware of...

  • Plans taking shape for Saturday's Army apology for 1869 bombardment

    Sam Pausman|Jan 9, 2025

WRANGELL - On Saturday, Jan. 11, the U.S. Army will issue a formal apology to the community for its December 1869 bombardment of Wrangell's Tlingit village, Ḵaachx̱aana.áakʼw. This is the third recent military apology to Southeast communities after the Navy apologized last fall for its attacks on Kake (1869) and Angoon (1882). Given the rarity of these admissions of guilt, there is little precedent for the structure of the event, meaning the planning - at least for the Wrangell apology - was...

  • Tiny's Taxi shuts down, leaving Wrangell without service

    Sam Pausman|Jan 9, 2025

WRANGELL - Next time your friend asks for a ride to the airport, say yes. You might be their only hope. After two years in service, Tiny's Taxi turned off the ignition for the last time on Dec. 31. Tiny's has been the island's sole taxi service since Johnny Cab ceased operations last summer. "It's been an incredible journey," Tiny's founder Mike Lewis said. "I've met some amazing people and made some amazing friends. (I've) played catchup with a lot of the old-school locals after 30 years of...
