    Four Petersburg Borough residents submitted letters of interest to fill the two vacant positions on the Borough Assembly and they each had a chance to state, to the Assembly, why they are willing to take the seats during the regular Assembly meeting Tuesday evening.   • Juvenile taken into custody following Kake homicide

    A 14 year old male was taken into custody Saturday evening in connection with the death of Mackenzie Howard. The body of 13 year old Howard was found in the entrance of the Kake Presbyterian Memorial Church Feb. 5 by a community member and has been declared a homicide by Alaska State Troopers. Investigation of evidence and interviews led troopers to arrest the Kake teen. He has been transported to a Department of Juvenile Justice holding facility in Ketchikan and due to the age of the suspect his name and charges that are pending against him... Full story

  • Assembly fills board vacancies

    The Petersburg Borough Assembly appointed interested parties to the vacancies on the Planning and Zoning Commission, Hospital Board and Land Selection Committee during its regular meeting Tuesday evening. The seven positions that were vacant for planning and zoning were filled by David Kensinger, Susan Thomason, Dona Malhoit Laubhan, Ronn Buschmann, Otis Marsh and James Demko with Thomason being named chairperson for that committee. Due to average team scores, the White Team of Christy Ware, Christen Fankhauser, Veronica Maldonado, Deborah Burrell and Shelly Pope were safe from elimination.     Despite the rain and cold, Petersburg residents gathered Saturday to celebrate Elizabeth Peratrovich, a civil rights activist who worked on behalf of equality for Alaska Natives. Peratrovich was credited with advocacy that gained the passage of the territory's Anti-Discrimination Act of 1945, the first anti-discrimination law in the United States. That’s the conclusion of Gunnar Knapp, fisheries economist at the University of Alaska/Anchorage in an overview of world markets to Alaska legislators. Knapp cited three key factors for the short term outlook: lower sockeye harvests, strong canned salmon markets with low inventories, and strengthening prices for farmed salmon.     Henry William (Bill) Hansen, 88, died on January 17, 2013 in Seattle. He was born in Nampa, Idaho on March 23, 1924 to Ole and Jonetta Hansen. The family moved around the Pacific Northwest, from the potato farm in Idaho to logging in southern Oregon and the Mount Shasta region of northern California all were part of Bill's early life.
