    The 55th Little Norway Festival begins today and Petersburg is ready to celebrate. This festival celebrates Syttende Mai or May 17, the signing of Norway's Constitution in 1814. Over the more than 50 years since its beginning, the Little Norway Festival has expanded to celebrate, not only, Norway's Constitution but also U.S. Armed Forces Day and the coming of spring and the beginning of the fishing season.   • Vikings track team sends seven to state competition

  • Petersburg locals find lost canoe paddles

    Members of the One People Canoe Society lost several of their canoe paddles, along with other equipment, as they made their way to Wrangell to participate in the rededication of Chief Shakes House. The canoers ran into bad weather in the Seymour Canal area and were forced to move from the canoes to a larger vessel.   • Volunteers needed to catch tagged derby fish

    The Petersburg Chamber of Commerce King Salmon Derby needs fishers to help catch the tagged fish for this year’s derby. The person catching each of the two fish to be tagged will win a Chamber of Commerce gift certificate for $50 for use at Petro Marine. The fishing effort will begin at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday May 22.     The Petersburg Police Department received a call from a concerned citizen Sunday, May 5 reporting a possible portable Methamphetamine lab. After further investigation, PPD, with the assistance of SEACAD and the U.S. Forest Service Law Enforcement, determined it was a portable lab. “A family was out hiking in the Noseeum and Lumber Street area,” Petersburg Police Chief Jim Agner stated. “They found a backpack and looked inside.     JUNEAU (AP) — A fight at Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau has left an inmate missing part of his ear. Alaska State Troopers say the victim had part of his ear bit off by another inmate Saturday afternoon. Alaska State Troopers were notified of the incident shortly after 3 p.m. A trooper dispatcher tells KINY-AM that the injured inmate was treated at Bartlett Regional Hospital.     Between 60 and 70 percent of Alaska’s seafood is exported to customers around the globe, and the strength of foreign currencies against the US dollar plays a big role in annual sales.     ANCHORAGE (AP) — An orphaned polar bear cub that arrived at the Alaska Zoo two months ago will soon depart for a new adventure: meeting another young cub at the Buffalo Zoo.     JUNEAU (AP) — Production of silver increased at Greens Creek Mine during the first quarter of 2013, mine owners said. Hecla Mining Co. said Friday the mine on Admiralty Island produced 1.8 million ounces, up from 1.3 million ounces in the first quarter of 2012. The mine saw a 20 percent increase in overall tonnage and a 15 percent increase in production of higher-grade silver, the company said.
