    Petersburg Indian Association will close the doors of the Seaside Restaurant permanently at the end of business Thursday, Feb. 28. “This is a venture that has to be self-sustaining,” PIA Tribal Administrator Bruce Jones stated. “There are no grants out there to run restaurants.” According to Jones, January was a good month and the restaurant still came within $730 of breaking even operationally, but that amount does not cover the debt. “There were loans taken out to get it up to the way it is now and it just isn't making enough,” Jones said.... Full story

  • PMC CFO, Leon Walsh to retire in July

    The Petersburg Borough Assembly is poised to reconsider action it took at their most recent regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 19 in a vote that denied Thomas Bay Power Authority General Manager Paul Southland the ability to extend his budgetary spending for office manager Rhonda Christian’s position.     WRANGELL — After carbon testing, a skull found on Government Slough last year has been found to be more that 1,000 years old – and is of Native Alaskan heritage. Aceveda was fined $500 with $200 suspended, ordered to pay restitution to the State of Alaska of $1,000, loss of hunting privileges for one year, probation for one year and court fees of $110. The White House compiled the numbers from federal agencies and its own budget office. The numbers are based only on the $85 billion in cuts for this fiscal year, from March-September.     Construction will begin again March 11 for the Petersburg Road Improvement Project. The work will begin with demolition work on Excel Street between Harbor Way and Nordic Drive which will be followed by installation of the storm drain system in the same area. “We will begin bi-weekly construction progress meetings again as soon as March 12,” HKM Dowl Project Engineer Matt McGuan said.
