Ocean Beauty officials say the fish processing plant took such a hard hit last month that it will not be in full operation this summer. The plant, situated at the end of a 1,500 ft. pier between the North and Middle harbors, was struck on May 7 by the Alaska Marine Highway System ferry the M/V Matanuska. The cause of the accident is still under investigation. According to Tom Sunderland, vice president of marketing for Ocean Beauty the plant will still be running its normal ice delivery service... Residents of Petersburg gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking for the new Petersburg Public Library Saturday morning. Rain did nothing to deter the mood of those gathered. Free umbrellas were handed out to those who wished to avoid getting wet. The event began with a performance of the Petersburg High School Brass Ensemble and the National Anthem sung by Tonya Abbott. May 31 Christine L. Stewart, 48, appeared before Magistrate Desiree Burrell for driving without a license. Stewart pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days in jail with 25 days suspended with one year of probation. In lieu of the five days in jail, Stewart may serve 40 hours of Community Work Service to be completed by August 15, 2012. Stewart was also fined a $50 jail surcharge and a $50 police surcharge. Petersburg Medical Center Board of Directors approved a 3 percent increase of rates and salaries beginning July 1. The increases will take place across the board, said Chief Financial Officer Leon Walsh. “We have a program that raises the rates for anything that we charge for,” Walsh said. The early morning hours of Tuesday found the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department at work extinguishing a blaze aboard a 17 foot Lund in the 300 block off of South Nordic Drive in a residential area. “The boat was completely destroyed, and it burned through the aluminum in some places,” Assistant Fire Chief David Berg said. “But the outboards may be salvageable.” The fire melted the tarp on an adjacent shed and the paint on the house blistered. “The fire got really hot,” Berg said. “It could have been a lot worse.” The owner of the home was co...

The Rasmuson Foundation named Petersburg artist, Ashley DuRoss an Individual Artist Award winner of a $5,000, Project Award. DuRoss is also the art teacher at Petersburg High School. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced last week the following information concerning the District 8 and District 11 drift gillnet fisheries: District 8: The second inseason estimate is projecting a terminal run size of 21,000 Stikine River Chinook salmon. The Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) said that its Port Efficiency Policy will go in effect June 1. The new policy states that an AMHS ferry will bypass a port call if there is no scheduled traffic destined into or out of that particular port.
