    The Petersburg High School girls basketball team are the 2015-16 2A Alaska State Champions. A 3-0 record in last weekend's tournament with wins over Dillingham, Nenana, and Bristol Bay clinched the Lady Vikings' first state title in program history. The 43-25, 50-39, and 43-34 victories capped off a 26-1 season for PHS.     The Petersburg High School boys’ basketball team is the 2A Alaska State Runner-Up for 2015-16. Early round victories over Bristol Bay (47-26) and Unalakleet (56-39) in last weekend’s state tournament set up a showdown with the Unalaska Raiders for the championship at Anchorage’s Alaska Airlines Center.   • Papke's Landing fire takes out trailer

    Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department (PVFD) responded to a fire call Sunday afternoon near Rory's Road at Papke's Landing, 10 miles south of town. The fire destroyed a 24-foot trailer home on the property being used as an office and led to a manufactured home sustaining significant damage, according to PVFD spokesman Dave Berg.     If a fisherman gets 50-cents a pound for his reds, how can the fish fetch $10, $15 or more at retail counters? “It’s all the other stuff that happens after he sells the fish. A lot of costs, margins and profits are included in that retail price,” said Andy Wink, a Fisheries Economist with the McDowell Group in Juneau.     Herring seiners from Petersburg headed to Sitka Sound last week after the sac roe herring fishery went on two-hour notice. The notice was released last Thursday morning at 11 a.m. Prior to the notice, Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) was busy sampling herring and conducting aerial surveys of the area waiting for the sac roe to reach the right maturity to open the fishery.     The Petersburg soccer team traveled to Juneau for a tournament held on March 11-13, and brought home third place. All of the opponents for Petersburg were from Juneau. Normally there is a team or two from Whitehorse at the tournament, but they did not make it this year. Twelve players made the trip, including 17-year-old Axel Vides.     Editions of the Petersburg Pilot and Wrangell Sentinel have been delayed for the past two weeks due to a breakdown of the platemaker at the Pilot printing plant.
