    While established Alaska ferries fight for funding, a small startup is about to launch from northern Prince of Wales Island. The North End Ferry Authority based in Coffman Cove has created the Rainforest Islands Ferry, a three stop service that revives a canceled route of the Inter-Island Ferry Authority.     Charles Zieske, "Chuck" or "Charlie" or "Chaz" as he was known, 66, died at his home in Point Baker, Alaska on March 18, 2015 after a brief illness. Chuck was born in Wrangell, February 5, 1949 to Ruth and Herb Zieske, and to older sister Darlene (Larson). The Zieske family spent most winters trapping around Louise Cove, Kuiu Island. They spent the bulk of the year in Point Baker, trolling for salmon and long-lining for halibut. Chuck was home schooled, but spent some time in Petersburg and Wran... Full story

  • Petersburg soccer team takes third in Juneau tournament

    Petersburg's adult co-ed soccer team took third place in the Southeast Alaska Shamrock Invitational tournament in Juneau. The three-day tournament was held March 20-22 and featured five teams from Petersburg, Whitehorse and Juneau. Brian Richards coached the Petersburg team this year, which had to overcome several hurdles in order to compete, including the loss of key players.
