    The Petersburg Pilot was judged the top weekly newspaper in the state at the Alaska Press Club competition last weekend. The Pilot placed ahead of the Homer News and the Capital City Weekly in Juneau. In judging the Pilot entries judges commented: “Nice layout. Great mix of stories. Headlines draw readers in. And in how many newspapers do you see a photo of a brown bear?     The Petersburg Borough Assembly met with department heads Monday afternoon in a work session to discuss the proposed 2013-14 fiscal budget. “For the 2013-14 budget, the general fund is presented to the Petersburg Borough Assembly as a balanced budget,” Petersburg Borough Finance Director Jody Tow stated. “Property tax revenue is budgeted to increase due to the new library bond and the proposed budget does not include any increase to the base tax rate of the borough.” Tow also explained that the borough is expecting to receive an additional $193...

    April 16 Jeb Phillips, age 25, of Petersburg, pled no contest to a violation of one count of Possession of Undersized Golden King Crab. Phillips, the commercial permit holder on the F/V Lone Fisherman, was cited by Alaska Wildlife Troopers on March 17 when undersized Golden King Crab were observed in his delivery to a fish processor.
