The Petersburg Harbor Board held a work session Friday afternoon in order to discuss options for reducing costs regarding the reconstruction of the North Harbor. PND Project Engineer, Dick Somerville, provided the board with five options to possibly decrease the $2.2 million overage in the $7 million budget. “Many of the cost increases are due to time,” Somerville said. “When the project was originally budgeted, costs for electrical supplies were 40 percent lower.” Somerville explained that there are approximately three miles of 2 ¼ inch dia... According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, Alaskan temperatures have been cooler and wetter than average for the first six months of the year. The entire state has had its 15th coolest January to June on record with temperatures 3.2 degrees below average. The Alaska Climate Research Center notes that May in the Southeast Region had a temperature 3.9 degrees below the long-term mean and monthly precipitation was high with 19.25 inches, more than doubling the long term mean of 8.20 inches. Worry for nothing To the Editor: I was worried about the Borough election until I reviewed the voter registration list for Petersburg. I discovered that Petersburg has twice as many Republicans as Democrats. (602 R’s vs. 297 D’s) Since Republicans believe in smaller government, they will naturally vote against the borough since becoming a borough will expand governmental control by 100 times. A bridge just outside of Petersburg city limits will be renamed in remembrance of Donald “Harry” Kito who perished while serving his country 45 years ago. ANCHORAGE (AP) — A vessel suspected of illegal driftnet fishing on the high seas was transferred to China by the U.S. Coast Guard on Tuesday. A Honolulu-based Coast Guard cutter assigned to Alaska encountered the 177-foot (54-meter) fishing ship in late July about 850 miles (1,369 kilometers) east of Tokyo. Coast Guard personnel boarded the ship and found 30 metric tons — more than 66,000 pounds — of albacore tuna. They also found 6 metric tons of shark bodies and fins on board. The Wild Celery art gallery hosted well known local artist Janine Gibbons for an artist’s reception on Friday evening. Gibbons now resides in Durango, Colorado with her husband and two children. Christopher Alan Torwick, 25, died August 5, 2012 at home in Sterling, Alaska. Chris was born July 21, 1987 in Soldotna, Alaska. He graduated from Soldotna High School and later received his Master ASE Certification. Chris worked at Moose River Auto and RV and also for Chinook Trucking. Over 70 golfers and friends turned out Saturday morning to participate in the Wrangell Medical Center Foundation’s Rally for Cancer Care.
