June 7, 1913 – For an old resident of Petersburg to take a glance over the harbor is enough to wake him up to the fact that the fishing season is on. In other words, this is harvest time. Many impatient fishermen have been waiting, waiting for the salmon to start running, and a few days ago it was reported that it had started. It is only two or three weeks ago that one could stand anywhere on front street and count all the way from fifty to possibly a hundred fishing crafts, from a common skiff to a 60 h.p. gas boat. Today, the last of them a...

    Shelly Pope|May 30, 2013

For the last 30 years, students from Petersburg High School have tracked the movement of LeConte Glacier and continue this tradition to this day. • The economic chain of salmon fishing

    Laine Welch|May 30, 2013

It takes quite a crew to get an Alaska salmon from “boat to throat,” and everyone along the line gets a cut of the catch. How that “value chain” has paid out in the past few years shows some nice gains for Alaska fishermen and processors. “We often get asked what share the fisherman retains, and how much each segment of the supply chain gets for salmon. The answer depends on the species, and the product you are talking about, and what gear type,” said Andy Wink, a fisheries economist with the McDowell Group in Juneau who compiled the report...
