  • Borough continues abatement process over spilled sewage

    Ron Loesch Publisher|Jul 8, 2021

It's been almost a year since the Petersburg Borough was made aware of raw sewage being dumped from a home owned by Courtney Johnson at 410 Mitkof Highway. At Tuesday's assembly meeting, assembly member Jeff Meucci asked borough officials to give a report at the next meeting on the status of the order of abatement issued last summer. Borough Manager Steve Giesbrecht said it looks like the borough will be forced to shut the water off to the home, making in uninhabitable. First, officials will...

  • Guest Editorial: A smack upside the head needed?

    Wrangell Sentinel|Jul 8, 2021

Alaskans have taken a collective leap over the embankment of common sense. We didn't merely leave the road to the Church of Wisdom, we turned to the false political god of the Church of the Permanent Fund Dividend to lead us to the promised land. Think about what Moses would do. Instead of leaving the Israelites on their own for 40 days during his hike up Mount Sinai to retrieve the Ten Commandments, what if he had climbed Denali and returned with a long-term fiscal plan for Alaska, only to see...

  • To the Editor

LeConte Bay To the Editor: All around the state we have names which have deviated from the pronunciation that was used at the time that they were named. There must be a natural human tendency to do that that is even stronger than the one that causes explorers to ignore the geographic names the locals use and bestow new ones. A couple of local examples are Sukoi and Kupreanof Islands. Pronouncing either of them in the phonetically proper way will instantly expose anyone who does so as not being...

  • Borough and PMC agree on site selection work

    Jul 8, 2021

The Petersburg Borough Assembly was advised Tuesday that site selection for a new hospital, according to CEO Phil Hofstetter, "is paramount." According to Hofstetter, an environmental assessment of each of the three proposed sites is necessary. The assessment can determine such things as availability of public utility services, economics, depth of muskeg, and other factors that can impact the cost of construction. Jul 8, 2021

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Gov. Mike Dunleavy said Thursday he has vetoed from a state spending package this year’s dividend check for residents, calling the amount “a joke.” The budget lawmakers voted on last month proposed a roughly $1,100 dividend but tied part of the funding to reserve accounts that required three-fourths support in each the House and the Senate. But the vote failed, leaving the dividend at $525, the lowest since the mid-1980s. Dunleavy said that is less than two days’ worth of per diem that lawmakers can collect. His office sa...

  • Fish Factor: New phone app collects science data from fishermen

    Laine Welch|Jul 8, 2021

Fishermen are the ears and eyes of the marine ecosystem as a changing climate throws our oceans off kilter. Now a new phone app is making sure their real life, real time observations are included in scientific data. The new Skipper Science smartphone app, released on June 18, comes from the Aleut Community of St. Paul Island in the Bering Sea as a way “to elevate the thousands of informal-yet-meaningful environmental observations by fishermen and others into hard numbers for Alaska’s science-based management,” said Lauren Divine, Director of Ec...
