Petitioners desiring a vote on whether or not the borough should prohibit the cultivation and sale of recreational marijuana met their deadline last week and gathered enough signatures to put the question to a vote. Over 430 names have been verified after being turned into the borough last Friday, which is well over the required 104 signatures petitioners needed. The office at the Petersburg Trial Court will no longer operate on Friday afternoons due to cutbacks the Alaska Court System is imposing to help save money during tight financial times. As of July 1, Magistrate Judge Desiree Burrell and her staff will be closing the office at noon, but she says the changes shouldn’t have a great impact on the community. WRANGELL - Close to 100 people participated in a memorial walk on Sunday, held to remember those killed or injured in a car crash in Petersburg early last week. Meeting at Wrangell's city dock, more than a third of the walkers were from the neighboring community. I attended my first Rotary meeting in 1976. I was 23 years old and the average age of the membership was about 60. Dave Ohmer, Jim Leekley, Oscar Jones, Jim Taylor and Adolph Mathisen were among the established members. June 23 Wesley Malcom appeared before Superior Court Judge Carey for a change of plea hearing. Malcom pleaded not guilty to an amended count of harassment in the second degree. A count of harassment non domestic violence was dismissed. Malcom was sentenced to 60 days in jail with all 60 suspended. He must also contact/be evaluated by a mental health agency. The Petersburg Ragnarök Rollers recently applied for a Community Service Award through First Bank that benefited both WAVE and the Petersburg High School Activity Program. Salmon takes center stage each summer but many other fisheries also are in full swing from Ketchikan to Kotzebue. For salmon, total catches by July 8 were nearing 28 million fish, of which 10 million were sockeyes, primarily from Bristol Bay. Last week marked the catch of the two billionth sockeye from the Bay since the fishery began in 1884.
