  • Red and Blue King Crab commercial fishery closed for this season

    The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced last week that the Alaska Red and Blue King Crab commercial fishery will be closed for the 2012/2013 season. According to Alaska Department of Fish and Game Biologist Joe Stratman, the biomass of mature male red king crab has been declining since 2001 and is currently at its lowest level in 22 years. ADF&G policy states that the department shall close the fishery if the department’s estimate of available harvest is below the minimum threshold of 200,000 pounds of legal male red king crab.     The Viking Cross-Country team traveled to Juneau for Regional competition last weekend and the girls came in third place behind Mt. Edgecumbe and Sitka. Grace Weller finished second with a time of 21:42 with Fran Abbott not too far behind in 11th with a time of 23:23.     Alaskan wife and mother of three, Vicki Sarber, was recently named Mrs. America for 2012. “I was thrilled to represent the amazing and diverse married women of Alaska,” Sarber said. “My family and I are so lucky to call this place home.” Vicki was raised in Anchorage and is married to Greg Sarber, who spent much of his childhood summers in Petersburg.     September 29, 1982- KRSA, Southeast Alaska’s newest radio station signed on the air at noon Friday, September 24 with a signal that reaches to Petersburg, Kake, Wrangell, Gustavus, Juneau and Telegraph Creek.     Sing Lee Alley bridge work needed To the Editor: If the city feels they can afford to spend 1.4 million dollars on property and take it off the tax rolls, then they should consider re-planking the Sing Lee Alley Bridge (or Indian Street bridge) before someone goes through it. Many of the planks are rotten and have holes, and it also would be easy to trip on some of the bent over spikes. As for the borough, it will cost more money and we all will end up paying more taxes.     JUNEAU (AP) — The Coast Guard will host a southeast Alaska petroleum spill exercise Wednesday at the Ted Ferry Civic Center in Ketchikan.
