Kent Miller passed away on September 22, 2017, after a remarkable 76 years of life. He was born in Petersburg to Richard and Vern Miller, both children of early Alaska pioneers. He graduated from Petersburg High School in 1959, attended the US Naval Academy and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1965. Gerald Justin Lind was born on June 26, 1925 in Everett, WA to Swedish immigrants Magda and Justin Lind. He died peacefully on September 28th, 2017 in Juneau, AK. Gerald moved with his parents at the age of four to Petersburg, AK. He attended his school years in Petersburg with some lengthy absences due to eye surgeries in Seattle, WA. Steven Thomas Davis, 57, passed on the evening of September 24, 2017. In February of this year, Steve was diagnosed with stage four-lung cancer. He was born on July 28, 1960 in Portland, Oregon to Bill and Barbara Davis. At a young age he and his sisters Lynn and Cheryl started work by berry picking at the farms close to their home. JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott has shot down a proposed ballot measure that calls for improved vetting of all projects that affect salmon streams, but supporters are trying to override his rejection. Superior Court Judge Mark Rindner will hear oral arguments in an appeal Tuesday, The Juneau Empire reported. Mallott last month ruled the measure unconstitutional, and thus invalid for the 2018 ballot. Volunteer firefighters in Petersburg received stipend hikes this week amounting to $240 each a year, a decision made unanimously by the assembly in a meeting this week. “Without these leaders in this department, we wouldn’t have a functioning unit,” said Eric Castro, an assembly member. “They should be better compensated for everything that they put forward.” The raise will apply to all volunteers besides the fire chief.
