A Chicago-based casting company is looking for Norwegian-Americans interested in learning more about their ancestry. Norway's popular reality TV show Alt for Norge or The Great Norway Adventure, is now accepting applications. "It's not a typical reality show that we'd think of, it's not mean spirited," says Joan O'Connor of O'Connor Casting Company. "It features people who really want to get in touch with their Norwegian ancestry." If chosen they'd be part of a 12-person cast and be flown to...
The Petersburg Borough Assembly held a public hearing regarding the issue of taking over three docks from state control on Monday. The assembly voted to draft a response to the state and asked for $1.2 million for the maintenance, raising the state’s original offer by $500,000, for the Kupreanof and Papke’s Landing docks. The letter respectfully declined the transfer of ownership for the Entrance Island dock. The original offer from the state included that property in addition to Kupreanof and Papke’s with a total of $730,000 for maint...

The club is open to any student in the eighth grade or above and the goal is for students to improve their community through regular service work. The project could be service oriented like partnering with the Salvation Army for a winter coat drive for tee...
November 11, 1916 – “Gee, but Sunday was an ideal day for ducks!” It wasn't a duck that emitted the exclamation, however, but one of a party of eight who spent the day hunting somewhere in the vicinity of Thomas Bay. They made the trip on Captain Grindrod's launch Lark. It is said that over a thousand shells were emptied by the party. Although C. H. Pautzke didn't make as much noise as some of the others, when the returns were computed it was found that he led with a limit of 25 ducks. November 14, 1941 – Much interest has been shown among t...

We realize the announcement back in August about the potential timber sales surprised members of the community, and that created great concern. We take responsibility for the way...
The State of Alaska provided Petersburg pedestrians with one of the most important safety measures that money could buy. They completed the Haugen Drive walking path to Sandy Beach Park. It’s a smooth, dry solid walking surface that’s easy to navigate with strollers, bikes, dogs or kids. However, it can only keep walkers safe if they use it. We continue to see people walking along the sometimes very narrow Haugen Drive right-of-way, at night, wearing no reflective clothing and with no light. Certainly there’s no prohibition to walking next...

PHS took six wrestlers to the Anchorage Christian Schools Invitational or ACS last weekend which is a highlight of the season for many athletes statewide. The Vikings at the tournament were aggressive on the mats, making coach Dan van Swearingen smile. “They wrestled well, we were pretty good on our feet,” he says. “We were tough and we were physical.” Buddy Stelmach is at the top of his weight class when it comes to performing, and van Swearingen says the difference between the third best wrestler at 126-pounds and the first is very small....

As Alaska’s iconic halibut fishery wraps up this week, stakeholders are holding their breath to learn if catches might ratchet up slightly again in 2017. Meanwhile, prices for hard to get shares of the halibut catch are jaw-dropping. The halibut fishery ends on Nov. 7 for nearly 2,000 longliners who hold IFQs (Individual Fishing Quotas) of halibut. The Alaska fishery will produce a catch of more than 20 million pounds if the limit is reached by the fleet. Last year, the halibut haul was worth nearly $110 million at the Alaska docks. For the f...
The borough assembly had over 20 people attend its Monday meeting this week. Many of the people in attendance were there to talk about the dock issue, and it seemed like the other half were there for the controversial proposal for the borough to sell Lot 10 in the 900 block of Sandy Beach Road. The borough would have to vacate a portion of a public easement to sell the land in question, 919 Sandy Beach Road.
