The Petersburg City Council and Petersburg Harbor Advisory Board held a joint work session Monday afternoon in order to decide the method for funding the $2 million shortfall for the North Harbor Project and they came to a decision. Resolution 2029 states that it is necessary for the City Council to approve a revision to the budget for expenditures unanticipated when the budget was approved. The Harbor Fund is in need of additional funding to complete the City’s North Harbor Replacement Project and to dispose of the North Harbor dredge spoils.... Full story

November 17, 1982: Permits, telephone cables, utility wires, cable t.v. lines and limited equipment are all slowing down the moving of the old Norheim house that was purchased by Paul Stoner from the city for $4,000 a few weeks ago. Stoner is required to have the house off the property by March of 1983. November 15 Dylan L. Barger, 14, appeared before Judge Kevin Miller for an arraignment on the charges of driving without a valid driver’s license and negligent driving. Barger entered a plea of no contest and was sentenced to a $100 fine, and a $10 surcharge for negligent driving. Barger could perform 20 hours of community work service for fine. It’s good that the borough election will get underway next week. Following months, even years of discussion, the electorate now will have their say as ballots are cast and the fate of the city’s borough formation effort is decided. Petersburg City Councilor Susan Flint is a lifelong resident of Petersburg and has put her name in the hat as a candidate for the proposed Petersburg Borough Assembly. Alaska Department of Fish and Game Sport Fish Biologist Doug Fleming approached the Petersburg City Council for approval to establish a local enhancement project that would release hatchery Chinook salmon near the mouth of City Creek. Alaska’s salmon harvest and value for 2012 came in well below last year, dropping 21 percent and 30 percent, respectively. According to preliminary state tallies, the value of the salmon catch totaled nearly $506 million at the docks this summer on a statewide catch of 124 million fish. Inez V. Van Buren passed away peacefully, November 12, 2012, in Bellingham, Wash. She was born April 11, 1922 on the family homestead in the log cabin that was used for the first school house on Pt. Agassiz, Alaska. Inez was born a twin, her brother Wilfred died at birth and was buried ½ mile from their home under a tree. The cross is there to this day.
