    Fifteen Petersburg Vikings track athletes qualified for state at the regional meet in Sitka last weekend. The girl's track team also won first place at the regional meet by more than 80 points.   • Assembly requests suspension of timber sale contracts

    The Petersburg Borough Assembly joined the City of Kupreanof in sending a letter to the University of Alaska President requesting the suspension of contract finalization for timber sales on South Mitkof Island.     The 33rd Annual Petersburg Chamber of Commerce King Salmon Derby gets underway this Friday at 7 a.m. The derby continues through the Memorial Day Weekend and ends Monday at 5 p.m. Two tagged fish will hopefully be available for anglers this year. Derby Committee member Doug Welde and volunteers were still seeking two Kings to tag at press time Thursday morning.     Hats off to Stan Hjort To the Editor: I would like to recognize Stan Hjort who escorted three Petersburg WWII veterans to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials that were built in their honor.     The Petersburg Borough assembly unanimously approved moving forward with police and municipal building remodel design and construction plans. The $506,654 plans and design will help lock in construction costs and get the project shovel ready, which Borough Manager Steve Giesbrecht said helps the borough when it lobbies for capital project funding during next year’s legislative session.     The Petersburg Vikings baseball team lost two home games against Sitka during last Friday’s double-header. Junior Colby Bell pitched the first game and struck out the first three batters in the first inning. In the bottom of the first inning, Petersburg had runners at second and third with one out but couldn’t bring them home.     The public will vote this October on whether or not they want Petersburg Borough elected officials to be exempt from the public official financial disclosure law, which requires public officials to disclose income sources and business interests.     JUNEAU (AP) — The Native regional corporation for southeast Alaska has reported losses of $35 million, with blame going to a subsidiary in Hawaii. CoastAlaska reports Juneau-based Sealaska is reporting the net loss for 2013. Sealaska says 75 percent of the loss was from a construction company based in Hawaii, which had underestimated two federal projects.
