    The U.S. Forest Service will soon be accepting comments on the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the Kake-Petersburg Intertie, a proposed electrical transmission line that would connect Kake to a SEAPA substation in Petersburg. The proposed project would bring cheaper power to Kake whose 550 residents are currently using costly diesel to power their homes and businesses.     Residents from the Mountain View Manor and PMC Long Term care served as judges for this year's Chamber of Commerce holiday light contest held Friday. Ross Nannauck and Rudy Nannauck's colorfully lit and musical home won the judges over for first place in the homes category. Ken Yuen took second place for best decorated home.     Though 97 percent of respondents said they are satisfied with Petersburg’s commingled recycling program, Public Works staff have also been alerted to possible improvements – including a switch to a cart-based program and bringing collection in house – after reviewing the results of a community survey that wrapped up last month about the program.     This fall’s Dungeness crab fishery preliminary harvest estimate is totaled at 975,000 pounds with 137 recorded permit holders fishing. According to Alaska Department of Fish and Game data, as of November 30, 19 percent of this year’s total fall harvest was caught this fall. During the previous ten year average, 25 percent of the annual harvest is taken in the fall.     The Lady Vikings took first place in last weekend's Little Norway Tournament. Petersburg's girls hosted teams from Haines, Ketchikan and Metlakatla.     The Petersburg Vikings placed third in last weekend's Little Norway Tournament. Petersburg hosted Craig, Ketchikan and Metlakatla.     Walter Dawson, 85, died peacefully in Juneau, Alaska on Dec. 11, 2014. He was born in Seattle, Wash. on Jan. 7, 1928 to Cora and Floyd Dawson. Walter was the seventh of fourteen siblings growing up in the family home in Puyallup, Wash. In the middle 1940s Walter followed in his brother's footsteps and joined the U.S. Army.
