A nearly week-long celebration for Independence Day brought a halt to Nordic Drive road construction and even a break in the clouds. The festivities kicked off on Tuesday evening with a retirement party for Judy Forgey, including a pie eating contest, at the Community Gym. The Petersburg Chamber of Commerce will kick off the 2013 Fourth of July events from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday with a retirement party for Judy Forgey, who is also this year’s parade Grand Marshal. The 32nd Annual Petersburg Chamber of Commerce King Salmon Derby gets underway this Friday morning at 7 a.m. The derby continues through the Memorial Day Weekend and ends Monday at 5 p.m. Two tagged fish will be available for anglers this year. Despite the rain and cold, the 55th Little Norway Festival was well attended and quite a success. There was a break in the rain for the Annual Festival Parade. The 55th Little Norway Festival begins today and Petersburg is ready to celebrate. This festival celebrates Syttende Mai or May 17, the signing of Norway's Constitution in 1814. Over the more than 50 years since its beginning, the Little Norway Festival has expanded to celebrate, not only, Norway's Constitution but also U.S. Armed Forces Day and the coming of spring and the beginning of the fishing season. Despite the rain, veterans and residents gathered to pay their respects and honor to U.S Marine Donald “Harry” Kito with the dedication of the formerly known Falls Creek Bridge in Kito's memory Sunday afternoon. Kito was killed in Vietnam in 1967, but was remembered with love and smiles by so many. Petersburg Bible Church welcomes Demer Webb as a new pastor for the growing congregation. Webb and wife, Dana, have been married for 14 years and have three children, Ethan, 10, Ella, 7 and Elijah, 2. The Webb family moved here from Atlanta and hopes to make Petersburg their home. A bridge just outside of Petersburg city limits will be renamed in remembrance of Donald “Harry” Kito who perished while serving his country 45 years ago. Jonathan Carl Ness, 61, passed away on June 8, 2012 in Petersburg, Alaska. He was born on August 15, 1950 in Petersburg, Alaska to Leo and Ruth Ness. Jon was the second son and younger brother to Steve. He was considered a miracle baby, being born with a congenital heart defect. Mom, Dad, Steve, and numerous friends had to help carry him up the stairs at school, as he was too weak to do so himself. Jon had two heart surgeries as a child. A group of Petersburg golfers seized the day last weekend as three teams from the borough took the top spots at the Bobs’ IGA 9-hole scramble at Muskeg Meadows Golf Course in Wrangell. The team of Randy Littleton and George Woodbury won the event on Saturday, May 19 after shooting a net score of 28(-8) on the par-36 course.
