Traveling is not new to most Petersburg High School students. They hop on a ferry for extended weekend sports, academic, and music competitions. They fly on planes when heading even further north or south. Our geography demands travel. But what would take seven PHS students over 5,600 miles from Petersburg, Alaska to San Jose, Costa Rica you might ask? Why Spanish, of course. Rowan Beraza, PHS Spanish teacher had a vision of a kind of cultural and language immersion for her second year Spanish...

That number will be confirmed at a meeting next year, at which they will decide what Petersburg organization a portion of the money should be donated to. Marcy Gelhaus was given the...

For most of us accessing clean water is as simple as turning on the faucet, but this isn't so in every community around the world. It wasn't until last month that the school children in Phu Kradueng in the Loei Province of Thailand got access to a reliable source of clean water, which came at the hand of a group of Petersburg residents. Despite the nearly 6,500 miles separating Phu Kardueng and Petersburg, the two places are more connected than one might think. Wear Eide-a native of the Thai...

Many around town already associate the industrious youngster with the homemade treats from events like Mayfest, The Market and Oktoberfest Art Share where he's become a staple vendor. The quick start to the Petersburg chapter of his business was made possible by his prior years of experience. The 7th grade homeschooler...
Lizzie Thompson began dreaming up a service project to participate in with her daughter, Kate, when Kate was still a baby. "I decided that when she was old enough to participate in and feel empowered by a service project that I would find something to do with her that would give her a strong sense of her ability to make a difference in this world and to know the wonderful feeling of helping others," Thompson said. Though she wasn't sure exactly what the project would be, a recent perfect storm...

Also who has a more beautiful cemetery then Petersburg? I think we do. I’ve been to most of them in Alaska and we out shine them all. Great job Jesse. Hope we don’t ever lose you. Patty Simpson Do your own research To the Editor: I admire and respect those who have been advocating for the formation of a Petersburg Borough.
