    The Petersburg Viking wrestling squad is taking ten of its athletes to the state tournament in Anchorage this weekend after a series of upsets and wins last weekend at the regional tournament in Sitka. Buddy Stelmach, who was seated 5th in the 98-weight class took first in the tournament after upsetting last year's regional champ. "That was an action packed match," said assistant coach Ed May.     The Vikings volleyball squad nearly beat the Sitka squad in what head coach Jaime Cabral described as a "heart wrenching" match last weekend during the regional double elimination tournament in Sitka. Sitka beat the Vikings in the first round but lost to Mount Edgecumbe in its next game. Sitka faced Petersburg again in an elimination game where the Vikings took the first two matches.     The Petersburg High School wrestling team won the invitational tournament it hosted last weekend. Eleven schools from across Southeast attended the round robin tournament. Petersburg head coach Dan van Swearingen said his team out-pinned its opponents. “Our team pinned all night and that’s why we had such high scores,” Van Swearingen said. “We were pinning machines.” DJ Toyomura, Bill Ware, Logan Turcott and Kaleb Simbahon all went undefeated over the weekend.     WRANGELL — Youth baseball came to Wrangell in a big way last weekend as the 2013 All-Stars tournament for Southeast Alaska kicked off at the diamonds near the Nature Trail. The competition featured teams from Wrangell, Petersburg, Ketchikan, Sitka, Prince of Wales Island and Juneau.     The Petersburg Vikings traveled to Sitka last week for the Region V Tournament and that is where the season for the Vikings ended. "We started out play against Mt. Edgecumbe," Head Coach Rick Brock stated. "We knew going into this tournament that to be successful we would have to play excellent basketball and have things go our way."     The Petersburg Middle School Viking wrestlers traveled to Ketchikan to participate in the Region V Tournament recently and came home fourth place winners.     Claude Frederick (Budd) Loesch, 82, died in his Beacon Woods, Fla. home on January 4, 2013. He was born to Gordon Edward and Geraldine Laura Loesch at his grandparent’s home in Erie, Pa. on November 28, 1930. He grew up in Ashtabula, Ohio and was reared by his mother and stepfather Richard Whitaker on the family farm.
