    Topi Karikorpi is this year's inbound Rotary Long Term Exchange student and he's been enjoying island life for two months now. He comes from a small village in Finland, and says he likes the size of Petersburg. "I live in a very little village in Finland," he says. "I live in a forest, literally."     Petersburg cross country had perfect conditions at state last weekend in Anchorage, and the girls team continued their pack mentality en route to finish fifth as a team. The meet was competitive, and head coach Tom Thompson said the talent keeps improving in Alaska. “I’d say the runners this year overall, in the state, outperformed the runners the last couple years,” he said. “The bar has been raised.     The Petersburg High School cross country teams took part in the Region V meet last weekend in Sitka, and the girls team ran away with the team championship. The girls will send seven runners to state in Anchorage this weekend, and they’ll be joined by one member of the boys team. “The girls did awesome,” coach Debby Eddy said. “They were incredible, they ran like a pack.” Kayleigh Eddy put up a personal record (PR) barely edging out teammate Shyla Cook for second place.     PHS cross country took on a hill-filled course in Juneau last weekend, and the girls came in second to Juneau-Douglas by one point. Head coach Tom Thompson said the finish, with the exception of regions last season, was the best he's seen a girls team have in his five years of coaching.     PHS cross country had an exceptional met in Metlakatla last weekend, with nine runners earning personal records (PR). The girls team placed first, edging Ketchikan by one point for the victory, and the boys took second as a team. Senior Kayleigh Eddy ran a PR for the first time since her sophomore year.     The PHS swim teams traveled to Sitka last weekend for the first meet of the year. The meet offered two days of events and showed the strongest events for the Vikings so far would be anything involving freestyle, according to head coach Andy Carlisle. "We had everybody do pretty good, especially in our freestyle races," he said. "Our other races weren't as good as the freestyle ones, but they were still pretty good overall."     Petersburg hosted around 200 cross country runners last weekend for a sunny installment of the Jack Eddy Invitational. The boys ended up taking fifth as a team and the girls earned second place coming in behind a tough Juneau-Douglas squad.     The Petersburg High School cross country teams traveled to Ketchikan last weekend to open the 2016 season. The boys and girls performed remarkably well to kick off the year, with the boys earning a sixth place finish and the girls taking third overall. Head coach Tom Thompson says the finish for the girls team isn't shocking, but he did have some questions about how they would bounce back after losing two impactful runners from last year's squad.     The local Rotary club is known for sending students on its year-long exchange program to study abroad, but this summer a PHS student took part in the club's short-term program. Gillian Wittstock spent four weeks with a family in Germany and the two girls who hosted her there recently traveled to Petersburg to stay with the Wittstocks.     Petersburg High track and field took 15 athletes to the state meet in Anchorage last week, and the girls team scored enough points to earn third place out of 29 1A/2A/3A teams.     Kåre R. Aas, the Norwegian ambassador to the United States, is in town for Mayfest, and he cannot wait to meet and speak with locals.     The weather finally cooperated with sunny conditions for the track and field teams last weekend in Ketchikan. PHS took over 30 athletes and 20 middle schoolers also made the trip to compete. Team scores were not available, but the teams performed well, according to PHS head coach Brad Taylor. "The kids did really well, I was really happy with our performances," he says.     Dan Wesley Crane, 75, died on March 15, 2016. He was born on December 2, 1941 and raised in Denver, Colo., to a third generation railroading family. He began his love affair with Alaska as a nine year old boy. He would read through a large stack of "Alaska Sportsman" magazines while his folks played a weekly game of pinochle at the neighbor's house. It was the team's first time partaking in the Big C Relays, an event put on by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
