    Two Petersburg High School seniors took first place in the 100 yard freestyle event over the weekend in the first swim meet of the season. Maria Pfundt took first in the girls 100 yard freestyle with a time of 59.77, and Peter Kowalski came in first place in the boys event at 51.68. Pfundt also placed second in the girls 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:15.05.     Half of 18 Petersburg High School runners that competed in the home cross country meet on Saturday set new personal records. PHS Sophomore Uriah Lucas came in third place overall in the meet and broke his previous personal record by about 58 seconds with a time of 17:22.2. Senior Melanie Chase was the top Viking runner in the girls race and took 13th place with a time of 21:52.     Two Petersburg High School students placed personal records at the first cross country meet of the season on Saturday. Sophomore Uriah Lucas came in 13th place at the Juneau meet and set a new personal record at 18:00. Sophomore Michael Durkin came in 31st place and set a new personal best at 19:18.     Running anywhere from four to eight miles a day, six days a week, the Petersburg High School cross country team has begun practicing for their first meet of the season at the end of the month. There are 20 kids on this year's team, which includes seniors Jack Byrer, Melanie Chase, Kole Sperl and Noah Sullivan.     It's been five years since the inception of the Devil's Thumb Shooter's Club, now a 501(c) non-profit youth organization with focus on shotgun competition sports. The club has grown from five members in 2015 to 17 members in 2019 consisting of area youths in elementary through high school.     The Petersburg High School varsity baseball team traveled to Juneau where they had their second win of the season in the first round of the region tournament. The Vikings played Thunder Mountain in their first game of the tournament on Thursday. The weekend before, the two teams had played each other in Petersburg, and the Vikings saw their first win in three years.     All 15 students on Petersburg High School's track and field team qualified for State after competing in the regional tournament in Juneau over the weekend. Even though all the students qualified for State, only five will actually compete in Palmer this weekend.     The Petersburg High School varsity baseball team played against the Sitka Wolves last week during the third week of the season, but the Vikings lost all three games.
