    The Petersburg High School wrestling team tied Wrangell High School for the second place spot at their first tournament of the season at the Tom Sims Invitational in Wrangell. The Vikings had a combined score of 130 points, and came in second place, with Wrangell, behind Ketchikan High School which had 268 points.     Peter Kowalski placed second in four events at the Ketchikan Invitational Swim Meet over the weekend, and Maria Pfundt came in first place in the women’s 100 yard butterfly. Kowalski took second place in the Men’s 200 yard freestyle, 500 yard freestyle, 200 yard IM and 100 yard freestyle.     The Vikings varsity volleyball team came out victorious at a tournament in Sitka over the weekend, after losing their first two matches of the season the previous week. At the start of the tournament, Petersburg played four matches made up of two sets. The Vikings won a set and lost a set in their matches against Metlakatla, Sitka and Klawock and won their match against Mt. Edgecumbe in the pool play matches.     The Petersburg High School boys cross country team secured the number two spot at the state championships in Anchorage on Saturday, with the girls team taking third place. Sophomore Uriah Lucas came in 10th place and was PHS' number one boy at the meet. He was able to shave two minutes off his time, coming in at 18:00, on the same track as last year's state competition.     Two Petersburg High School seniors took first place in the 100 yard freestyle event over the weekend in the first swim meet of the season. Maria Pfundt took first in the girls 100 yard freestyle with a time of 59.77, and Peter Kowalski came in first place in the boys event at 51.68.     Half of 18 Petersburg High School runners that competed in the home cross country meet on Saturday set new personal records. PHS Sophomore Uriah Lucas came in third place overall in the meet and broke his previous personal record by about 58 seconds with a time of 17:22.2.     Two Petersburg High School students placed personal records at the first cross country meet of the season on Saturday.     Running anywhere from four to eight miles a day, six days a week, the Petersburg High School cross country team has begun practicing for their first meet of the season at the end of the month.     It's been five years since the inception of the Devil's Thumb Shooter's Club, now a 501(c) non-profit youth organization with focus on shotgun competition sports. The club has grown from five members in 2015 to 17 members in 2019 consisting of area youths in elementary through high school. Even though all the students qualified for State, only five will actually compete in Palmer this weekend.
