For the first time since 2018, the PHS girls' cross country team are the Region V Champions for Division III. Last year – despite a few very strong finishes including a second place overall finish from Maria Toth – the girls' team was unable to place as a team because of having too few runners, which made this year's championship win that much sweeter. Petersburg High School's volleyball team lost their first games of the season, falling to the Ketchikan Kings in games one and two this past week. The Vikings lost the first set of game one 25-13, 25-17 in the second set, and 25-19 in the third set on Thursday, Sept. 26, in Ketchikan. Coming off a season in 2023 where they made the state championships, the Vikings are looking to return to the championship meet in Anchorage, Alaska. Triathlete Dustin Barber competed in Petersburg's Summer Sprint Triathlon last Saturday, running a personal best for himself, finishing with a time of 69 minutes and 18 seconds – an improvement from 2023 when Barber completed the triathlon in 71 minutes and 46 seconds. Petersburg's Rebecca Fisher, a 17-year old competitor in Native Youth Olympics, brought home a gold medal this month from the 2024 Indigenous Summer Games in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada.
