  • Falling with a smile

    Jess Field|Feb 25, 2016

The clock shows 5:30 a.m. in the Parks and Rec community gym and the youth roller derby team is busy gearing up for their weekly two-hour practice. The first 20 minutes or so are dedicated to putting on protective guards for their knees and elbows, followed by laying out the red markers for the track boundaries. For Coach Lisa Nilsen, the early hour practices are a sign of the players' dedication, and believe it or not, actually help them focus. None of the players are yawning or leaning up...

  • Vikings drop two against Chiefs

    Jess Field|Feb 25, 2016

The Petersburg High School boys basketball team traveled south to take on the Metlakatla Chiefs last weekend and lost both games. The last time the Vikings took on the Chiefs the games went differently with the Vikings keeping Danny Marsden of Metlakatla in check. Marsden is one of the better players in the state, so holding him to 11 points in two games made a huge difference. This time, however, Marsden went off for 18 and 21, giving him 39 points for the weekend while leading the Chiefs to two close victories. “On Friday’s game we pla...

On Friday, the girls scored 12 points in the first quarter, with Emma Chase putting up half of the points. Going into the second quarte...

  • Vikings go 1-1 against Wrangell

    Jess Field|Feb 18, 2016

The Petersburg High School boys basketball team made the short trip south to Wrangell last weekend, but the result of the two-game set was not what Vikings fans wanted. It was homecoming weekend for Wrangell and the Wolves played tough, close games and beat the Vikings on Saturday. Head coach Rick Brock said he knew the Vikings would be in for two tough games going into the weekend, and Friday's bout was a low scoring, make-every-possession-count contest. In the first quarter, Petersburg only managed to put up six points, but they held Wrangell...

  • Learning mental toughness on the mats

    Jess Field|Feb 18, 2016

Last year, the Mitkof Middle School wrestling team came in second at regions behind Ketchikan. Earlier this season, Petersburg won the Craig Tournament, beating Ketchikan by half a point, even without a full roster. Regions is this weekend for the Vikings, and beating Ketchikan in their home gym would really cement lessons the young wrestlers are learning on the mats. "Our main goal right now is to just stay together and be focused," head coach Mike Corl says. "It's very possible that this year...

  • Vikings put down Glacier Bears twice in Haines

    Jess Field|Feb 11, 2016

Petersburg boys basketball headed to Haines last week for a two-game set. Whereas the Vikings started game one a bit sluggish, Haines came out aggressive, getting up and down the court with ease. However, the Glacier Bears could not sustain the effort allowing the Vikings to gain their composure and take control. Head coach Rick Brock says the boys came out a little ragged and Thursday's 59-33 win was closer than the final score showed. During the second half, defensive stops resulted in...

    Jess Field|Feb 11, 2016

The Petersburg girls basketball team earned two wins in Haines last week. The Lady Glacier Bears put up a fight on Thursday night, but the Lady Vikings pulled away early on Friday and never looked back. "I thought we shot the ball well both nights," says head coach Dino Brock. "We didn't get a lot of free throws, but we also shot the ball well from the free-throw line." Petersburg girls basketball went to Craig on Thursday and Friday for a two-game set against the Lady Panthers. Craig celebrated homecoming on Friday, but the Lady Vikings put a damper on the festivities by winning both nights. Head coach Dino Brock says the team played tough team defense both games and really controlled the Panthers. “We did a nice job blocking out and rebounding,” Brock says. “Everybody that played did a nice job.” Brock says the games were not high scoring, and the Lady Vikings did not shoot the ball as well as they had in...

  • Vikings victorious in Craig, spoil Panthers homecoming

    Jess Field|Jan 28, 2016

The Petersburg High School boys basketball team took two games from Craig last Thursday and Friday, but the Panthers played tough and showed resilience on their homecoming night. Head coach Rick Brock says Friday’s game was a good learning experience for his team about how to deal with the adversity and play through the emotions of a game. On Thursday, the Vikings played very well from the start and were rolling on the offensive end of the court, quickly jumping out to a 28-10 lead at the end of the first quarter. Craig had no answer for the P...

The Lady Vikings prepared to play against the zone defense all week in practice, and Metlakatla did not disappoint. The Lady Chiefs were on point and played very good on the defensive end Friday and Saturday. The intensity of the Lady Chief’s on defens...

  • Viking wrestlers gain valuable experience at State

    Jess Field|Dec 24, 2015

Petersburg High School sent six wrestlers to State in Anchorage last weekend. Although the results were somewhat underwhelming the experience should help build the Viking wrestling program. The team consisted of a freshman, a sophomore, three juniors and a senior, and they combined to take 22nd place among 30 teams. Standout Buddy Stelmach beat his first opponent by pin, then took on Luciano Fasulo of Homer. Fasulo is a seasoned freshman who came into the tournament with a 40-8 record. Stelmach battled, but ultimately fell to Fasulo by major...

  • Lady Vikings take first in tourney play at home

Michael Brock Special to the Pilot|Dec 24, 2015

The Vikings began Thursday's game with Wrangell on a 16-0 run and went into halftime leading 23-5, with many buckets coming in transition. The Vikings were also able to play 10 players in the first half, a few of whom had little prior varsity minutes. Coach Dino Brock says getting this experience will be beneficial as the season...
