The Petersburg High School wrestling team headed south for the 2016 Bill Weiss Invitational last weekend and finished in the middle of 15 teams. The high school swim team performed well at regions last weekend qualifying three swimmers for the state meet in Juneau this weekend. A couple swimmers barely missed out on making the trip to Juneau, but everyone gave it their best, according to head coach Andy Carlisle. Ben Higgins and Izabelle Ith will return to state for the second consecutive year. Higgins earned third place in the 200 yard freestyle and second place in the 500 yard freestyle. Petersburg played host to over 10 teams last weekend for the All Comers Tournament. Head coach Jaime Cabral and the coaching staff were busy taking turns coaching three PHS squads that saw a lot of action over the weekend. Psg 3, the youngest PHS team, finished first in their pool and headed to the silver bracket. Petersburg’s volleyball team traveled to Klawock last Wednesday, facing off against six 2A teams in three days as part of the first regional seeding tournament of the season. Head Coach Jaime Cabral said despite some players dealing with injuries and the long, busy weekend, “the weekend was a good one.” Fresh off the ferry, both Petersburg and Wrangell teams had just 15 minutes to warm up before beginning their first game. The Petersburg High School swim teams took off to Juneau last weekend to compete in their final meet before regionals in two weeks. Mitkof Middle School cross country hosted the first meet in the young history of the program last Saturday with a sizable squad from Ketchikan. Petersburg cross country had perfect conditions at state last weekend in Anchorage, and the girls team continued their pack mentality en route to finish fifth as a team. WRANGELL – Area golfers raised close to $6,000 over the weekend during the annual Rally for Cancer Care and Blue Tees Tournament. Money raised from the two-part tournament go to support Wrangell Medical Center Foundation's cancer care fund, which in turn provides up to $1,000 per year to patients undergoing treatment for cancer-related illness. As he prepares to add another year to his coaching career, PHS cross country coach Tom Thompson is excited for the 2016 season. The Devil's Thumb Shooters put on a show and brought home some hardware, including a hat with a bunch of holes in it, from the state competition held in Wasilla June 8 - 11.
