    The Petersburg High School swim team is busy getting ready for the upcoming season, and the numbers are better than normal, according to head coach Andy Carlisle. “We had 14 in the water yesterday,’’ he said on Tuesday. “They look pretty good, we’ve been hitting it hard already and they have been responding pretty well.’’ The team has senior leadership returning and four freshmen new to the squad this year.   • Cancer care tourney pencils in $6,000 over weekend

    WRANGELL – Area golfers raised close to $6,000 over the weekend during the annual Rally for Cancer Care and Blue Tees Tournament. Money raised from the two-part tournament go to support Wrangell Medical Center Foundation's cancer care fund, which in turn provides up to $1,000 per year to patients undergoing treatment for cancer-related illness.     As he prepares to add another year to his coaching career, PHS cross country coach Tom Thompson is excited for the 2016 season.     The Devil's Thumb Shooters put on a show and brought home some hardware, including a hat with a bunch of holes in it, from the state competition held in Wasilla June 8 - 11.     Soon-to-be PHS senior Izabelle Ith traveled to Kodiak last Saturday to compete against the top track and field athletes in Alaska. Ith, coming off another impressive season, earned the invitation to the event and took home three first place finishes. Ith won the triple jump, long jump and 4x400 meter relay.     Petersburg High track and field took 15 athletes to the state meet in Anchorage last week, and the girls team scored enough points to earn third place out of 29 1A/2A/3A teams. The number of competitors was the most head coach Brad Taylor had ever taken to the season finale, and every Viking scored points in at least one event.     The Petersburg High School baseball team wrapped up the season hosting Regionals last weekend. They dropped their final two games after winning the tournament opener. The team made some defensive mistakes allowing opponents to tack on runs, but all and all, head coach Jim Engell was pleased with the weekend and the team's performance.     The boys and girls track and field teams both earned second place finishes behind Sitka at the regional meet last weekend in Juneau. Seventeen athletes qualified for events at the state meet in Anchorage, but only 15 will make the trip.     The weather finally cooperated with sunny conditions for the track and field teams last weekend in Ketchikan. PHS took over 30 athletes and 20 middle schoolers also made the trip to compete.     The Petersburg Ragnarök Rollers earned the championship at the team's second bout of the season last weekend in Ketchikan.     Ten members of the Petersburg High School track and field team traveled to Anchorage to open up the 2016 season last weekend. It was the team's first time partaking in the Big C Relays, an event put on by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
