  • Viking girls win Regionals in tough weather conditions

    Jess Field|Oct 1, 2015

Petersburg cross country girls are heading back to State, after an exceptional meet and first place team finish at Regionals last weekend in Juneau. The boys squad finished in fourth place, and had a good showing, but just fell short of making a return trip to the State meet. The runners faced windy and rainy conditions which contributed a couple inches of mud in multiple spots on the course. Head coach Tom Thompson says cold temperatures affected some of the Viking runners, and the teams found... Full story

  • Viking wrestlers ready for start of season

    Jess Field|Oct 1, 2015

Viking wrestling started up Wednesday, although the majority of kids out for the team this season have already been getting in shape for weeks with preseason workouts. Head coach Dan van Swearingen says the goal for the first week of practice is getting the kids a little tougher and focused on wrestling. Petersburg is looking to build upon their 3A Regional championship from last year, but the drop in classification from 3A to 2A this year does not necessarily mean easier competition. And getting kids spread out in the right weight class can...

  • Viking cross country makes final push for State

    Jess Field|Sep 24, 2015

Petersburg cross country teams traveled to Ketchikan last weekend for their final regular season meet before the much anticipated Regionals in Juneau this weekend. The Vikings continued to clock lower times, and 12 of 17 runners ran Personal Record's (PR's). Head coach Tom Thompson was pleased with the excellent performance of his roster from top to bottom. Senior Maura Moyer was among the many runners setting PR's over the weekend. Junior Mariah Taylor set a PR by breaking the 24 minute mark...

  • Petersburg swim teams still improving

    Jess Field|Sep 24, 2015

Petersburg swim teams headed to the Ketchikan Invitational last weekend, and there were no signs of slowing down since their home meet in Petersburg. If anything, Viking swimmers took the time off to improve their conditioning and the hard work paid off. Both squads placed third in the team standings for the weekend, and head coach Andy Carlisle was pleased with the efforts of everyone. “We had a good showing at Ketchikan,” Carlisle says. “We raced a lot better than we did two weeks earlier and looked much more fit.” Carlisle says he was especi...

  • Viking cross country teams place high against tough competition

    Jess Field|Sep 17, 2015

Petersburg High School cross country had tough competition at the Wrangell Invitational last weekend. The boys and girls faced a field with multiple 3A and 4A teams, including Juneau-Douglas, Thunder Mountain and Ketchikan. The meet hosted over 200 runners, and the course proved to be quite fast. The boys team place sixth overall in the 1A/2A/3A/4A standings, and third among 1A/2A/3A squads. And the girls team finished third in 1A/2A/3A/4A, finishing behind first place Juneau-Douglas and only...

  • Viking volleyballers are ready to go

    Jess Field|Sep 17, 2015

Petersburg High School volleyball started this week, and over 35 girls will be participating for the Vikings. Last year, the volleyball team played as a 3A team, and this year they will be playing in the smaller 2A classification, but still face serious competition. Head coach Jaime Cabral says the girls were excited to start practice on Wednesday, and he believes his “scrappy” squad will be prepared and ready to play. The Vikings first junior varsity and varsity matches will be in Juneau against 4A Juneau-Douglas on Oct. 2 and 3. Cabral say...

    Jess Field|Sep 10, 2015

The Petersburg Swim and Dive team began the season last weekend by hosting Craig and the larger 4A Ketchikan, which fielded A and B squads. The girls and boys performed well on Friday and Saturday, winning several events and both teams placed second in the overall team standings. "The team did better than I expected, they finished races a lot better," said head coach Andy Carlisle. "I thought we would not be able to finish quite as well, but they finished very well." Mariah Taylor won the girls...

    Jess Field|Sep 3, 2015

The Cross Country team traveled to Sitka last week for the first meet of the year, and both squads finished about where head coach Tom Thompson expected. The girls finished fourth overall in 1A/2A/3A/4A, but first in the 1A/2A/3A division. The boys finished fifth overall in the larger 1A/2A/3A/4A division, and second in 1A/2A/3A. Each team typically has seven competitors, with the top five individual performances from each team being recorded for overall points. Thompson says the loss of a...

  • Swim and Dive season ready to go

    Jess Field|Sep 3, 2015

After graduating over half the boys from a very successful 2014 campaign, Swim and Dive coach Andy Carlisle says his team is ready for the challenge of rebuilding. And last year’s accomplishments serve solely as motivation, not undue pressure or expectations. “It’s going well and the kids are stepping up pretty good,” he says. This year, there are six boys on the team and only four girls swimming for the Vikings, which is about average. Carlisle says he wishes more girls participated, but it’s normal to have a small turnout because they face a...

He's also the first in PHS track history to earn a state title in that event. Sophomore Izabelle Ith earned four sta... Full story

  • Baseball seasons ends for Vikings at regionals

    Mary Koppes|Jun 4, 2015

The Petersburg High School baseball team ended their season with two losses in the Region V double-elimination tournament held in Juneau last weekend. The Vikings faced off against number four seed Thunder Mountain on Thursday in the opening game of the competition. PHS previously beat Thunder Mountain in two of three games played at home, but in game one of the tournament, Vikings' fielders struggled with routine defensive plays, while the Falcons capitalized on those errors, winning 12-0. He said the boys team has come close to earning the regional title in the past, and this year's victory was hard... Full story

  • Injury shakes up Vikings; PHS falls to Kings in three games

    Mary Koppes|May 28, 2015

The Vikings baseballers struggled to match the Ketchikan Kings intensity in a three-game matchup last week. A Friday night injury to starting pitcher Colby Bell’s hand shook up the team; they were finally able to recover and play competitively against the Kings in the weekend’s final game. In game one, where PHS failed to bring home runners in scoring position, Kayhi was able to take advantage of Viking field errors to do just that. “We struggled with runners in scoring position. We had runners at second and at third four different times and j...

Aulbach has been in the water since he was a child, originally learning to swim for the same reason many Petersburg youngsters do. "I started about when I was five," he said. "My mom put me in swim lessons because she wanted me to be able to swim if I fell off the boat." He swam in elementary school as part of...

Harbor Bar's team defeated the Haakons 25-4 Saturday to claim the victory. Mamie Nilsen, who played on the Petersburg Medical Center team and has run the tournament in the past, said it was named for Corl, who died in a plane crash in 2011, because he used to always play. "He was a great player, always hitting home runs," she said. It's also a lot of fun, she added....

"Overall it was a very, very good meet for us," he added. Quitslund set a new PHS record for the boys 3200 meter run, finishing in 10 minutes and 24 seconds. "That broke the old school record that stood for...
