The Petersburg High School baseball team ended their season with two losses in the Region V double-elimination tournament held in Juneau last weekend. The Vikings faced off against number four seed Thunder Mountain on Thursday in the opening game of the competition. The...
The boys Track and Field team emerged as the Region V champs at last week's regional meet in Juneau. The girls team took second place, behind Sitka, and twelve PHS athletes qualified for the State tournament in over twenty events. "It was pretty remarkable. The kids all stepped up and performed equal to or better than what we had kind of anticipated," said Head Coach Brad Taylor. He said the boys team has come close to earning the regional title in the past, and this year's victory was hard... Full story
The Vikings baseballers struggled to match the Ketchikan Kings intensity in a three-game matchup last week. A Friday night injury to starting pitcher Colby Bell’s hand shook up the team; they were finally able to recover and play competitively against the Kings in the weekend’s final game. In game one, where PHS failed to bring home runners in scoring position, Kayhi was able to take advantage of Viking field errors to do just that. “We struggled with runners in scoring position. We had runners at second and at third four different times and j...
Petersburg High School senior Abel Aulbach will trade in his Viking blue for the University of Louisville's Cardinal red as he suits up to swim for the school's team starting this fall. Aulbach has been in the water since he was a child, originally learning to swim for the same reason many Petersburg youngsters do. "I started about when I was five," he said. "My mom put me in swim lessons because she wanted me to be able to swim if I fell off the boat." He swam in elementary school as part of...
Petersburg High School's (PHS) Track and Field team took a small but mighty subsection of runners, jumpers and throwers to Ketchikan last week where another four school records were broken. Also adding to his record-breaking streak was River Quitslund who set a new record for the boys 800 meter run. Senior Ben Zarlengo took first...
The Eric Corl Memorial Norske Softball Tourney saw four teams competing for the championship during Little Norway this year. Harbor Bar's team defeated the Haakons 25-4 Saturday to claim the victory. Mamie Nilsen, who played on the Petersburg Medical Center team and has run the tournament in the past, said it was named for Corl, who died in a plane crash in 2011, because he used to always play. "He was a great player, always hitting home runs," she said. It's also a lot of fun, she added....
Sophomore Izabelle Ith and senior River Quitslund collectively broke four Petersburg High School (PHS) records at the Juneau Invitational May 8-9. Those record-breaking runs and jumps, in addition to several other personal bests, made for a "very special meet," said Head Coach Brad Taylor. "Overall it was a very, very good meet for us," he added. Quitslund set a new PHS record for the boys 3200 meter run, finishing in 10 minutes and 24 seconds. "That broke the old school record that stood for...
Strong hitting and good defense contributed to two wins at home against Thunder Mountain on Friday and Saturday. The Falcons kept the Vikings on their toes, and each game was hard fought. Senior Colby Bell was the starting pitcher in game one. With Bell at the mound, the Falcons struggled offensively, earning just four hits and two runs. "Colby pitched another masterful game," Head Coach Jim Engell said, adding that Bell pitched 15 strikeouts during the game. "He's averaging a little over two...
Petersburg High School is examining the possibility of altering requirements for valedictorian status, among other potential changes for next year. Principal Rick Dormer presented a “very draft” version of grade and graduation proposals during the school board’s meeting Tuesday evening in assembly chambers. The process began last fall with former superintendent Lisa Stroh. Dormer said he’s received some parent feedback, but no student input yet. The goal is to have changes in place for the new school year. Right now, the school takes academi...
Petersburg High School (PHS) senior River Quitslund will be adding his talents to a young team of runners at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) this fall. Quitslund has been running competitively all four years of his high school career. "I've been running competitively since my freshman year when I started cross country, but I didn't really take it that seriously until January last year when I started doing pre-season," he said. His increased efforts were met with a setback as an injury kept...
The Petersburg High School baseball team opened its season at home versus the Sitka Wolves, defending state champs, in a three-game match up last weekend. Though the Vikings didn't come out on top in the games, Head Coach Jim Engell said he was happy with his team's performance. "For our first games of the year and starting a pretty young group of kids, I think we did quite well," he said. The Vikings fell to the Wolves 2-0 in Friday's game, which Engell described as the epitome of a pitcher's...
The Petersburg High School track and field team participated in the first official meet of the season in Ketchikan last weekend. The girls and boys team each finished in second place over all. PHS runners and jumpers faced off against those from Prince of Wales, Thorne Bay and Ketchikan. "It was just a real small triangular meet. We did not take a very big crew as far as high school kids," said Head Coach Brad Taylor, adding that a lot of middle school kids also participated in the meet....

The Petersburg Vikings placed third in the 3A division of the Region V Tournament in Ketchikan last week after falling to Sitka in overtime last Thursday morning. Head coach Rick Brock said despite the loss, the team came back from a disappointing performance in their opening game on Tuesday. “The boys were pretty upset on Tuesday just in the way that we performed. They knew that they hadn’t done their best,” Brock said. “We talked with the team about coming out on Thursday and playing with some energy, some emotion and, I guess it’s a cliche...
The Lady Vikings started off the Region V Tournament with back-to-back victories against the Sitka Lady Wolves on Tuesday and the Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves on Wednesday. In Tuesday's game, the well-matched Lady Vikings and Lady Wolves kept pace with scoring in the first three quarters and strong defensive play kept both teams from putting many points on the board. After three quarters, just one point separated the two teams with the Vikings up 30-29. The game was decided in the fourth quarter...
In their first game in the Region V Tournament in Ketchikan, the Vikings fell to the Mt. Edgecumbe Braves 49-65. About half of the Braves points came from baskets made at the free-throw line, with Mt. Edgecumbe making 30 of 42 baskets from the line. Two Vikings players, Alan McCay and Kayin McCay, fouled out as a result. "We just fouled too much and gave up too many lay-ups. And then we were having to work hard on our end to score," Brock said. The boys were back on the court after two and half...

A low scoring first quarter by both teams was followed by a strong offensive run by the Vikings in the second quarter of Wednesday's match up. "We were actually able to hold them to one point in the second...
