  • Vikings win two games at home

    Kyle Clayton|Dec 25, 2014

The Petersburg Vikings placed third in last weekend's Little Norway Tournament. Petersburg hosted Craig, Ketchikan and Metlakatla. Head Coach Rick Brock said the Vikings played a solid game Thursday night beating Craig 82-44. "It was our first home game and everybody was probably a bit nervous but all the players on the team had a chance to get some time on the floor," Brock said. The Vikings jumped out to an early lead scoring 19 points in the first quarter and continued to dominate throughout...

  • Wrestlers walled out at state meet, Vikings back to the mats for next year

    Erik LeDuc For the Pilot|Dec 18, 2014

Viking wrestlers didn’t manage to seize the crown during this year’s competition at the state wrestling championship, pulling up third as the closest as four boys made their bids for first. “It was a tough tournament – state is never easy,” Coach Dan Van Swearengen said. “I felt we could have wrestled a bit better, the same for regionals, I feel like the guys were holding back.” Buddy Stalmach, the only sophomore amongst seniors, went to his first fall-free tournament, winning and losing exclusively by pins. Appearing tired and nervous in his f...

  • Lady Vikings open the season strong

    Mary Koppes and Orin Pierson|Dec 18, 2014

The lady Vikings started the season strong with two wins at home against the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears last weekend. The Vikings topped the Bears 53-30 Friday night and 50-32 on Saturday. Coach Dino Brock said the girls' strong start gave them a momentum that carried them throughout the game. “We just kind of jumped out of the lead to start with in the first quarter and just built on it,” Brock said. The team exhibited strong defense and rebounding, which helped keep them ahead and ultimately secure the lead. “Especially for early in the s...

  • Petersburg boys battle hard but fall to Kayhi

    Mary Koppes and Orin Pierson|Dec 18, 2014

The boys basketball team played hard in their season opener away against Ketchikan last weekend, but ultimately fell in both games to the 4A team. The Vikings are a young team this year with only three experienced players returning to the variety squad. "We're very young. We really returned three played that had any significant minutes last year," Coach Rick Brock said. "Over half our team wasn't on varsity or even in high school last year." That, in addition to Ketchikan's status as one of the...

  • Wrestlers win 3A Region tournament, four heading to state meet

    Erik LeDuc|Dec 11, 2014

The Vikings more than held their own against a fuller regional pool than usual, coming out on top of the 3A southeastern region schools during the battle in Wrangell. The 3A team racked up 11 pins in the tournament, fourth in the overall bracket behind the filled rosters of Ketchikan, 17, Wrangell, 15, and Craig, 15. In addition to the usual spread of 1A, 2A and 3A teams that gathered for the matches, the larger 4A teams also were included, Assistant Coach Rob Schwartz said. "I knew Ketchikan... Full story

  • All-Stars split with Wrangell in final game of youth season

    Erik LeDuc|Dec 11, 2014

The Parks and Rec All-Stars were fast and fiery for their final matches of the season, running ahead of even themselves as they strove for victory against visiting Wrangell. The matches came out with mixed results for the teams – the girls took their shot with a close 14-18 loss on Friday, but saw Wrangell far ahead on Saturday, finishing 10-24. The boys, meanwhile, came out with all cylinders firing on the first day of the match, cleaning up 26-6. Saturday saw them keeping the same spread, 2...

  • Girls on the Run improvise 5k in the snow

    Mary Koppes|Dec 11, 2014

Girls on the Run participants traded their running shoes for snow shoes after slick, icy roads prohibited the group of young runners from completing a scheduled 5k race on Saturday. "Mother nature had her own plan that morning. Due to the wet snow on the icy roads, plan B came into effect," said Joyce Burk-Biggs, one of the program's organizers. With a little creative thinking and help from the community, the event changed course and took advantage of the snowy day. Officer Derek Thorsen...

  • Hockey club angling for new recruits ahead of tournament

    Erik LeDuc|Dec 4, 2014

The Wild Kings of Petersburg aren't strapping on their ice skates just yet, but the season is just about right for hockey as winter sets in. As the club waits for the weather to allow area waterways to properly freeze, they're typically found in the community gym with roller blades instead, testing tricky shots, movements and generally how to stay upright and untangled from the swarms of swatting sticks that gather in pursuit of the puck as they practice swoops across the polished floor. Though...

  • Ragnarök Rollers skate Fall Brawl at Wrangell

    Mary Koppes and Dan Rud|Nov 27, 2014

The Ragnarök Rollers, Petersburg's roller derby team, bouted against Wrangell's Garnet Grit Betties Saturday evening at the Fall Brawl in Wrangell as some 260 spectators cheered on the skaters. "We didn't win but it was closer this time so that was good," Coach Rebecca "Midlife Tigress" Anderson said. This was the third time the two teams have dueled it out since the Petersburg team was formed in late 2012. The Betties started out strongly, picking up an early lead and building from there. By...

  • Viking wrestlers take fourth in Bill Weiss bouts, readying for regions

    Erik LeDuc|Nov 20, 2014

Throughout history, sages and generals have proclaimed that the greatest teacher a man may have is his adversary, and Vikings wrestlers hit a bit of a learning curve at the Bill Weiss tournament in Ketchikan as they faced off against some of their toughest competition yet, taking fourth for the tournament. Though Coach Dan Van Swearengen had initially planned to rest more of the team, the lure of the prestigious tournament still called out nine wrestlers, who typically picked up rankings...

  • Lady Vikings take third in regions, Emma Chase goes all-conference

    Erik LeDuc|Nov 20, 2014

The Lady Vikings rallied against great odds in their final regional battle, pushing Sitka to the edge in their final 3A tournament that also saw sophomore Emma Chase selected as one of six outstanding southeastern players selected for the all-conference team in recognition for her tremendous efforts on the courts. "This is our last year in 3A, so it was kind of bittersweet," Coach Jaime Cabral said. "All the 3A teams get along really well, we know when to turn the competition switch on and off....

  • Aulbach breaks state swim record; Vikings boys place fourth overall

    Erik LeDuc|Nov 13, 2014

Abe Aulbach went out in style, smashing a state record for the 100-yard freestyle race set in 1998, as he and many of his teammates took their last competitive lap in Anchorage at the state competition, with the tiny team more than holding its own against schools that dwarf its roster. Aulbach, swimmer extraordinaire by the collective opinion of all the coaches at the state meet, who named him outstanding male athlete of the event, brought in Petersburg's only first place prizes for the 50- and... Full story

  • Volleyball in extra match against Wrangell, preparing for 2A change

    Erik LeDuc|Nov 13, 2014

Viking volleyball got a taste of the years to come on Nov. 4, when they had a friendly match with past and future rivals in Wrangell. The teams haven’t met on the courts for several years, as a higher student headcount kept Petersburg in the larger 3A districts – but now that the student body is shrinking again, the neighboring Wolves will be more often seen stalking the fields, taking the place of departing foes in Sitka and Mt. Edgecumbe as the school changes to 2A. But if their recent spar is any measure of what’s to come, the Vikings will...

  • Wrestlers under the weather, sharpening skills in downtime

    Erik LeDuc|Nov 13, 2014

Viking wrestlers went for broke again in Sitka, going first or nothing when it came to the championship rounds of the unconventional double elimination tournament and taking three titles for Petersburg. Buddy Stalmach, 113; John Brooks, 145; and Billy Ware, 152, all took tops in their divisions, wrestling undefeated through the ranks. “We didn’t bring everybody — we left Brandon (Ware), 192, at home, but he could have probably taken first or second,” Coach Dan Van Swearengen said. “John Brooks, he went back up to 145 pounds instead of 138, w...

  • Vikings boys Region V swim champions

    Erik LeDuc|Nov 6, 2014

The Petersburg Vikings swim because they're too fast for sports that require clothes, the banners at the aquatic center proudly proclaimed, backed by dozens of individual posters cheering on particular players with a mixture of confidence and teasing. The town came out to support its own at home, and swimmers continued to give their fans reasons to cheer as the boys team brought in another win ahead of the upcoming state meet, where nine Viking swimmers will take on the best aquatic youth of Ala... Full story

  • Younger Vikings volleyball team tastes victory

    Erik LeDuc|Oct 30, 2014

While the Vikings Varsity volleyball team is away, the JV girls went to play in Sitka — and they played hard, winning the majority of their matches with Assistant Coach Arlana Corl. “It was an exciting weekend,” she said. “We went to a tournament with small schools, and the larger schools had their JV teams. There were, I believe, nine schools represented with 18 teams total. We had two. Most schools send their JV (teams) to the tournament.” Starting out with pool play, Corl said the Vikings were divided up into the mostly sophomore team one...

  • Vikings get the pin again as wrestlers continue improvements

    Erik LeDuc|Oct 30, 2014

The wrestling Vikings are continuing to bring in wins, mixing up their rosters and rankings over the weekend at Juneau. "It was a pretty big meet, but we only brought seven guys - our two captains, John (Brooks) and Bill (Ware), they stayed here," Coach Dan van Swearengen said. To fill those empty slots, he brought along "a couple of the younger guys," who had been waiting, with varying amounts of patience, for a chance to wrestle more outside competition - and they performed surprisingly well....

  • Weary Viking swimmers continue to maintain lead, readying for regional

    Erik LeDuc|Oct 23, 2014

Swimming Viking boys continue to carve themselves a place ahead of their competitors, though that margin remains slim as competitors kick hard to catch up. The team took first place at their recent invitational at Sitka both Friday and Saturday, with Thunder Mountain and Sitka right behind, 116 to 112 (Sitka) on Friday and a larger gap of 128 to 84 (Thunder Mountain and Sitka both) the day after. That’s with everyone dragging one or two seconds behind typical times to boot, Coach Andy Carlisle said. “We didn’t swim very fast, but we still...

  • Two Vikings crowned at local wrestling tournament

    Erik LeDuc|Oct 23, 2014

The season has just begun, and already it's a good year for Petersburg wrestling, coming in with four boys in the final bouts of a weekend invitational that brought teams from across the southeastern boot of the state and even a fly in visit from the northern reaches. All told, about 150 boys and girls were seen contorting themselves and, hopefully, their opponents over Friday evening and a grueling, day long extravaganza on Saturday. When all was said and done, blood and sweat cleaned from the... Full story

  • Strong start for PHS wrestling, next test at home

    Erik LeDuc|Oct 16, 2014

Petersburg wrestlers got a taste of what the coming season will have in store for them, coming off a Round Robin tournament hosted in Metlakatla last weekend. "Everybody wrestled everybody in their weight class," Coach Dan van Swearingen said. "My older guys, my seniors just killed it down there – for the freshman it was kind of an eye opener, this is what high school wrestling is all about." The wrestling Vikings carry a long legacy of regional championships and strong state performances, proud...

  • PHS honors music to depart, All-State selected

    Erik LeDuc|Oct 16, 2014

Petersburg continues to field talented musicians, with an even dozen set to depart for the Southeast Alaska Honors Music Festival in Juneau and half that beginning their preparations for the longer trip to the All-State performance in Anchorage. "This weekend they'll arrive at Thunder Mountain High School and spend an intense two and a half days rehearsing and finally performing the concert on Tuesday night, the 22nd," said Matt Lenhard, music instructor at Petersburg High School. Lenhard added...

  • Vikings chase competitive edge for volleyball conquest

    Erik LeDuc|Oct 16, 2014

When it comes to volleyball, the Vikings are learning that they can hold their own against the toughest teams in the region, coming closer to the tipping point from hard-fought games to well-earned wins. Recently, the team finished in the top bracket of the Juneau Invitational Volleyball Extravaganza (JIVE), losing out at the end to tournament winner Mt. Edgecumbe, who they will face again soon. "It's a very, very good tournament that brought teams from West Anchorage down – we got to see s...
