    Petersburg Vikings Cross Country teams, both the boys and girls, took second place at Saturday's Metlakatla Invitational. Ketchikan took first at the 1A/2A/3A meet. Other teams competing included Wrangell, Metlakatla, Thorne Bay, Klawock, Hydaburg and Craig.     Vikings Swim and Dive team started the season with a home meet, hosting Thunder Mountain and Sitka over the weekend. "We had a really good meet.     The Petersburg girls track team placed higher than any other Petersburg team in history during last weekend's state meet in Anchorage. They took fifth out of 29 teams from across Alaska.     The Petersburg Vikings baseball team lost two home games against Sitka during last Friday’s double-header. Junior Colby Bell pitched the first game and struck out the first three batters in the first inning. In the bottom of the first inning, Petersburg had runners at second and third with one out but couldn’t bring them home.     Petersburg High School track team athletes performed well in a meet last weekend and several are on the right track to qualify for state. Petersburg athletes competed against Ketchikan and Thorn Bay in Ketchikan.     The Petersburg Vikings baseball team won its first varsity game since the team’s creation eight years ago. The Vikings have played at the junior varsity level until last year.     The Viking Swim Club competed last month in the Alaska Swimming Junior Olympics in Anchorage. Twenty-four teams composed of 496 athletes competed in the statewide contest. Petersburg's team was one of the smallest with only 6 swimmers, however each athlete placed in the Top 10 in each event.     Petersburg soccer players took home championship trophies from the Shamrock Soccer Tournament held in Juneau last weekend. This is the second year Petersburg athletes have competed in the coed tournament and Team Captain Joe Viechnicki was one of 12 soccer players who played.     The local hockey club The Petersburg Whalers won the Rainforest Classic's B Division tournament in Juneau earlier this month.     The Lady Vikings beat the Sitka Wolves during the first game of the Regional Tournament in Sitka yesterday.
