The Petersburg High School wrestling team won the invitational tournament it hosted last weekend. Eleven schools from across Southeast attended the round robin tournament. Petersburg head coach Dan van Swearingen said his team out-pinned its opponents. “Our team pinned all night and that’s why we had such high scores,” Van Swearingen said. “We were pinning machines.” DJ Toyomura, Bill Ware, Logan Turcott and Kaleb Simbahon all went undefeated over the weekend. The Petersburg Vikings volleyball teams traveled to Sitka for conference games and Juneau for a tournament last week. Head Coach Jaime Cabral said although the girls didn’t win last Wednesday’s and Thursday’s conference games, they had every game in their hands. The Viking Swim Club competed in Sitka’s October Splash Meet last weekend. Coach Andy Carlisle commented that for only having one month of practice it was a good meet. Skipper Erickson, 16, took first in the men’s 200-yard freestyle event with a finals time of 2:00.92. The Vikings varsity girl’s volleyball team had a strong start last Friday night when they faced Sitka High School but didn’t pull through for the win. Petersburg’s high school girl’s volleyball squad fell to the two time defending state champions of Mount Edgecumbe in Sitka last weekend. Vikings cross country runners were in Juneau for the season's last regular meet over the weekend. They ran against teams from throughout Southeast, with 76 girls and 92 boys competing in rainy, windy conditions. Juneau's course is reputed as the toughest around mostly due to its numerous hills, but conditions were even more extreme on Saturday. Wrestling Hall of Fame member Wade Schalles taught a wrestling camp in Petersburg last week. Schalles won four NCAA Championships, is registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the most pins and wins of any wrestler and won 15 national championships in five different disciplines. The long distance runners of Petersburg High School’s girls and boys cross country teams travelled to Ketchikan on August 31for their season opening meet. The Petersburg teams are comprised of around 20 runners who have been practicing hard since the fifth of August. “They came in prepared to run and ready to work hard,” said Vikings head coach Jo Ann Day. The final showdown of play at the 2013 Region II All-Stars Little League tournament in Wrangell culminated on Thursday night as the home team took on – and came close to beating – perennial rival Petersburg. WRANGELL — Youth baseball came to Wrangell in a big way last weekend as the 2013 All-Stars tournament for Southeast Alaska kicked off at the diamonds near the Nature Trail.
