    Petersburg Swim and Dive team went north for the Juneau-Douglas Invitational last weekend and swam some great races with several best time performances. “Our boys team continues to look strong and we should be in the running for region champs,” said Vikings Head Coach Andy Carlisle.     Sitka hosted the Region V Cross-Country Championship meet last weekend and the Vikings girls team took first over all other small schools in the 1A/2A/3A divisions, with Mt. Edgecumbe as runner up. Ten years have passed since Petersburg cross country last brought home a Regional Championship. This big win follows an impressive, undefeated season for the girls squad.     The Petersburg High School swim team took several first place positions two weeks ago in Ketchikan. The men’s 200-yard relay team placed first with a time of 1:46.32. Skipper Erickson, 16, took first in the men’s 200-yard freestyle event with a finals time of 2:00.92.     The Vikings varsity girl’s volleyball team had a strong start last Friday night when they faced Sitka High School but didn’t pull through for the win. Assistant Coach Lana Corl said she’s happy with the girl’s performance in the face of a more experienced team. “We came out Friday night and showed them our stuff,” Corl said.     Petersburg’s high school girl’s volleyball squad fell to the two time defending state champions of Mount Edgecumbe in Sitka last weekend.     Vikings cross country runners were in Juneau for the season's last regular meet over the weekend. They ran against teams from throughout Southeast, with 76 girls and 92 boys competing in rainy, windy conditions. Juneau's course is reputed as the toughest around mostly due to its numerous hills, but conditions were even more extreme on Saturday.     Wrestling Hall of Fame member Wade Schalles taught a wrestling camp in Petersburg last week. Schalles won four NCAA Championships, is registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as having the most pins and wins of any wrestler and won 15 national championships in five different disciplines.     The Petersburg High School Vikings volleyball team opened the regular season last weekend by hosting the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears for two days of games.     The long distance runners of Petersburg High School’s girls and boys cross country teams travelled to Ketchikan on August 31for their season opening meet. The Petersburg teams are comprised of around 20 runners who have been practicing hard since the fifth of August. “They came in prepared to run and ready to work hard,” said Vikings head coach Jo Ann Day.     Soccer players in Petersburg began an exciting new tradition earlier this month. For the first time ever, a group, many of whom have been playing soccer together for over ten years at the Community Gym, formed a co-ed Petersburg team and travelled to Juneau to compete in the Shamrock Invitational Indoor Soccer Tournament.
