Vikings girls basketball started out the competition season with a weekend on the road against a perennial powerhouse, the Lady Braves of Mt. Edgecumbe. The Petersburg girls have a lot of fresh faces with eight out of the 13 girls traveling to Sitka being freshmen. The Vikings played their first basketball game of the season last weekend in Ketchikan. It was an endowment game, which means it won’t count toward either team’s season record. “The game started out a little rough for us,” said Vikings head coach Rick Brock. The Petersburg Viking wrestlers traveled to Anchorage for the Anchorage Christian School tournament last weekend. With seven Petersburg wrestlers traveling to the tournament, the team finished with an overall record of 17 wins and 16 losses. Petersburg had its first wrestling tournament in over a year Oct. 12. The Vikings have ten wrestlers on the team including 98 pound sophomore D. J. Toyomura, who finished the weekend with a 4 and 0 record. In his first tournament championship, Toyomura was matched with first seed Wrangell opponent Curtis Wimberly and Toyomura won. The Petersburg Smashanuskas finished 12th overall and eighth in their category in a field of 123 teams in the Klondike Road Relay last week.
