She was one of 6 children born to Gudrun (Tandstad) and Carl Thynes originally from Sykkylven, Norway. Gladys graduated from Petersburg High School in 1954. She met her husband Harley in Petersburg where they lived until 1961. Both her children Gayle and Chell were born in Petersburg.
