United States Postal Inspector Adam Henney, Petersburg Police Investigator Kalin Rosse and the Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs (SEACAD) intercepted approximately 19.93 grams of heroin as it was being mailed into the community.
In a statement made by the Petersburg Police Department, an ongoing investigation produced a package with slightly less than one ounce of heroin addressed to Jeff Kyle Smith, 49, of Petersburg.
The heroin was reported to have a street value of $18,000.
Henney and Rosse contacted Smith in the parking lot with the package and they placed him under arrest.
Henney reported that a search warrant was applied for and received before Smith arrived and authorities opened the package to find a black/brown substance that field tested positive for heroin.
Officers also served a warrant on the Smith residence in Town Trailer Court. Several items were seized in the search including scales, packaging material, a quantity of cash and heroin paraphernalia, according to police.
Smith pled not guilty to the charge before Deputy Magistrate Kimberly Rice over the weekend and bail was for $6,500 to be paid in cash before release with conditions.
This arrest is part of an on-going SEACAD investigation.
