Grace Weller was the Vikings top performer at the regional cross-country meet, finishing second place among the 2A/3A girls in the 5K race. Her performance along with a number of strong races by fellow Vikings qualifies the Petersburg girls team to advance to the State meet in Anchorage. See page 7 for the story and more photos.
Aaron Murph was the top competitor for the Vikings boys. He ran a 19:45 for a 31st place finish, out of 76 runners.

The Viking Cross-Country team traveled to Juneau for Regional competition last weekend and the girls came in third place behind Mt. Edgecumbe and Sitka.
Grace Weller finished second with a time of 21:42 with Fran Abbott not too far behind in 11th with a time of 23:23.
Robyn Schwartz finished 17th with a time of 24:05; Kylie Wallace came in 25th at 24:39; Stephanie Pfundt crossed the finish at 26th place with a time of 24:50 and Nicole Peterson came in 34th at 26:10.
“Stephanie and Fran both had really good races,” Head Coach Jo Ann Day said. “The really stepped up to score those points we needed.”
For the boys, Aaron Murph was the first Viking to cross the finish at 31st place with a time of 19:45; John Brooks came in 33rd with a time of 19:51; Mizani Rawhani finished 36th at 20:01; David Galaktionoff came in 39th at 20:08; Tucker Hagerman crossed the finish at 42nd place with a time of 20:35; Cole Somerville came in 43rd at 20:39 and Kyle Hagerman finished 62nd with a time of 24:21.
“The top male finishers are only 50 seconds apart,” Day said. “It was fun to see them come in as a Viking pack.”
According to Day, this is a young team and they will be spending the remainder of their time getting faster for next year.
“The girls team is looking forward to racing in Anchorage,” Day stated.
The Viking girls will compete in state competition in Anchorage at Bartlett High School Saturday, Sept. 29.
