Volunteer firefighters and EMS responded to a report of smoke coming from the eaves of a home owned by Beulah Luhr at 1.8 Mile Mitkof Highway on Sunday night. Smoke alarms were also activated inside the structure.
According to department spokesperson Dave Berg, the fire was called in by Janet Seaman who was walking by the home at about 6 p.m. Sunday.
Berg, one of the first on the scene, found smoke venting from the upper levels of the home.
Upon gaining entry to the home, fire fighters found and extinguished a fire in the floor rafters between the basement and living area of the home. The fire damage was reported in the basement level of the home with smoke damage to the upper levels.
Cause of the fire is under investigation according to Berg, but it is suspected the origin of the fire was electrical in nature.
No one was home at the time of the fire.
Berg said Mitkof Highway was closed to traffic in both directions for about a half hour while fire fighters fought the blaze. The closest hydrant was located on the uphill side of the highway, so traffic could not navigate past the home while the connecting hose line was laid across the highway, according to Berg.
