Viking swimmers make a splash at State meet

The Petersburg Vikings traveled to Bartlett for the State swimming competition qualifying nine swimmers for the meet.

“The Vikings made us all very proud at the State High School Swimming and Diving meet last weekend,” Head Coach Andy Carlisle said. “But the highlight of the meet, of course, was Abel Aulbach winning the 50 and 100 yard freestyles.”

Vince Kowalski finished fifth in the finals for the 200 yard freestyles and came in seventh in the finals for the 500 yard freestyle.

Shalie Dahl finished in sixth place in the finals of the 100 yard butterfly and Shania Dahlberg came in seventh in the finals of the 500 yard freestyle. Dahlberg and Eva Kowalski came in eighth and 11th in the preliminary matches for that race as well.

Grace Weller finished in 10th position in the semi-finals of the one meter diving competition and Evan Marsh finished fifth in the finals of the 100 yard backstroke.

The team of Marsh, Skipper Erickson, V. Kowalski and Aulbach finished fifth in the 200 yard freestyle relay and the team of Marsh, Ian Fleming, V. Kowalski and Aulbach came in fifth in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

“Our boys relays did well with Aulbach, Fleming, V. Kowalski and Marsh finishing fifth in the 400 yard relay,” Carlisle said. “The boys team finished in fifth place in team scoring behind Dimond, Sitka, Kodiak and Thunder Mountain and the girls were tied for 15th with Homer and Thunder Mountain.”
