PIA will apply to replace Sing Lee Alley Bridge

The Petersburg Indian Association Tribal Board received reports from various departments outlining the programs they are involved in and what is happening within the organization during its regular meeting Monday evening.

The PIA Transportation Department will submit an application for the replacement of the Sing Lee Alley Bridge.

"The Petersburg Borough's engineers anticipate the cost of replacement at $1 to $1.2 million," PIA Transportation Director Will Ware reported. "The maximum funding allowed through the Tribal Transportation Bridge Fund is $1 million. The balance will have to be raised through the Borough should we get approved and agree to proceed."

Ware has also submitted a proposal to the Federal Lands for a Federal Lands Access Proposal.

"The proposal is for funding $750,000 of our anticipated total project costs of $907,712," Ware reported. "This proposal will pay for our Forest Service Roads Maintenance program for the current year, as well as blasting and crushing 10,000 cubic yards of rock, which we use for resurfacing roads and for fill material for culvert replacement."

The Transportation Department has also been building picnic tables that are identical to the tables at the Blind Slough picnic site.

"We have already begun placing these tables at Green's Camp and should have them finished being built and placed next week," Ware reported. "There will be a total of 13 tables made from local Spruce milled from a local saw mill."

Ware explained that this project took a little longer than anticipated as they only had access to the high school wood shop for 2.5 hours per day in the afternoons.

"We are appreciative of the high school for donating shop time," Ware wrote. "We used their machines to plane each board smooth to the correct thickness."

Work will begin on the Forest Service logs starting March 11.

"This work will include mobilizing equipment and beginning to remove snow from project areas," Ware reported. "Our first projects will be replacing the running deck of both Ohmer's Creek Bridge on Woodpecker Cove Road and Falls Creek Bridge at 4.5 mile of Three Lakes Loop Road."

Office Manager Ronelle Beardslee has been busy reorganizing since taking the interim position with PIA at the beginning of February.

"We have cleaned, organized, labeled and inventoried all of the office supplies," Beardslee reported. "The accounting room was also cleaned and reorganized and many of the positions are being cross-trained for times of absence. This will allow business to continue during a vacation, or sickness."

PIA Tobacco Prevention Program Director Mark Banda will be teaching a class on the immediate benefits of smoking cessation for Petersburg Parks and Recreation Losing Big event at 7 p.m. March 12.

March 20 will mark "Kick Butts Day", for the PIA TPC program.

"This is an event taking place nationwide," Banda reported. "Its purpose is to spread the word on the ill effects of tobacco use and will utilize the youth in community."
