Woman wins derby with some 'kelp' from her husband

Karen Malcom won this year's King Salmon Derby after battling a 46.4-pound Chinook last Saturday afternoon.

Besides fishing the derby one day last year, Malcom hasn't fished during the annual event for 15 years until last weekend.

"My husband invited me to spend the weekend fishing with him and I took him up on it," Malcom said. "It was good quality time with he I and my dog. It was a family outing."

Stan Malcom and Karen Malcom got skunked Friday. Stan Malcom caught a halibut on Saturday and about an hour later Karen Malcom saw a strike on her rod.

The husband and wife team had quite the adventure bringing it in. Stan Malcom gave an impromptu fishing lesson while he unwrapped the line the fish had wrapped around his line.

"I'm reeling and reeling while husband is yelling about how to catch the fish," Karen Malcom joked. "It was a lot of 'don't do this' and 'don't do that.' I was saying 'don't yell at me.'"

Meanwhile, the fish wrapped the line around the bottom of an iceberg. And, if things weren't chaotic enough, a piece of kelp that had a rock attached to it fell off the iceberg down around on her line.

"I've got this heavy kelp rock on my line and Stan's down on the swim step trying to get that off and the whole time the fish is still taking line out," Malcom said. "My arm was getting pretty sore."

After unwrapping the line from every possible obstruction the sea could throw at them, Karen Malcom finally brought the fish up to the surface.

"We brought it on board and I was doing my happy dance," Karen Malcom said. "The first thought in my head was I get to have a coat like Stan's because he won the derby in 2011.

I always envied that coat."

Karen Malcom clocked in the prize-winning fish at 1:31 p.m. on Saturday. She said when she told somebody about how her line was caught up on an iceberg, it tipped people off that she caught the fish near Jap Creek.

"I had all the rest of Saturday, all of Sunday and all of Monday to sweat it out," Karen Malcom said. "On Saturday there were probably 20 boats out there (Jap Creek). On Sunday there were over 35. It was like combat fishing."

Besides the jacket, she won $7,000. She plans to use the money to pay some bills, pay her boat share and buy an airline ticket to see her parents in Washington.

As far as the prize king salmon goes, she plans to smoke it and share it around town.

She might even share some with her husband.

"I have thanked him numerous times, and I told him he could teach me how to fish anytime he wants," Karen Malcom said.
