Michael J. “Carpie” Carpenter, 59, passed from this life on August 19, 2014 at his home on Kupreanof Island, outside of Petersburg, Alaska.
Mike was born on February 26, 1955 in Topeka, Kan. He graduated from Hayden High School in 1973 and attended Washburn University. Mike earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scout organization, sparking his life long love of the outdoors. In the mid 1970s, Mike and a group of his friends made a trek to Petersburg, to try their luck at fishing. The other “Kansas boys” eventually left, but “Carpie” built a cabin and made Alaska his home. He spent his life fishing and working around Petersburg. He was a solitary man, but a good neighbor and friendly to those he met.
Mike was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret (Welch) Carpenter.
He is survived by one brother, Pat (Kathryn) Carpenter of Oceanside, Calif., and three sisters: Theresa (Joe) Lintner and Marie (Roger) Howard of Topeka, Kan., and Mary (Gordon) Schroeder of Herington, Kan. and multiple nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and interment was held at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Topeka, on September 9.
