Petersburg WAVE (Working Against Violence for Everyone) will be holding a creative fundraiser this Saturday at the Sons of Norway hall.
“We have a lot of local artists that are doing pieces on watercolor paper and some of them will be on canvas. The way that they’ll be priced is $1 per square inch,” explained Carey Case, board president for WAVE.
The event–appropriately dubbed Art by the Inch—is very interactive, allowing attendees to size up large works of art and select a portion to be framed. Mats with typical framing sizes from 5x7 to 16x20 will be available for participants to use to get a sense of what the cut and framed piece will look like.
“After the evening is over we’ll have our framers cut those (selected) pieces and wrap them and that’s what you get to take away,” Case said. “It makes original art affordable and you can kind of decide how much you would like to spend and kind of experiment on what size or what part of the painting you like.”
The art pieces have all been donated by local artists.
“One fun thing about it is it really showcases all the talent we have in this town,” said Case.
Additionally there will be a silent auction, appetizers and a no-host bar on site. The suggested donation for entry is $10.
Case said that the funds raised will go toward keeping WAVE sustainable into the future.
“We do have funding through the state of Alaska as an emerging program dealing with domestic violence, but we’re anticipating in the future that we’re going to have to be doing some fund matching in order to retain funding with the state,” she said. “So this would go toward being ready for that.”
Doors open at 6 p.m. on Saturday for the event with the art selection processing beginning around 7:30 p.m.
WAVE is a non-profit organization that assists people who are experiencing domestic violence or sexual assault.
