Brian Varela / Petersburg Pilot count
Karen Hofstad was awarded the Evangeline Atwood Award for Excellence by the Alaska Historical Society for preserving Alaska's salmon canning history. She began collecting maps of Alaska and salmon can labels when she first moved to Petersburg in 1959. Over the years, she has loaned out her collection to exhibits and publications, and in 2017, Hofstad donated her collection to the Alaska State Museum. She also financed the compilation and oversaw the publishing of the book, "Tin Can Country: Southeast Alaska's Historic Salmon Canneries."
