Nine active COVID-19 cases, community spread likely

The Petersburg Medical Center reported eight new cases of COVID-19 Monday bringing the total number of active cases to nine along with several tests currently pending.

Contract tracing has been initiated by Public Health and it is believed that community spread is most likely the avenue of transmission for some cases.

The Petersburg School District also reported that several students have recently tested positive for COVID-19 and the district has entered red status. Universal masking was reintroduced and practices today were canceled. Contract tracing has commenced and at this point there have been no school or classroom closures.

Persons who test positive are urged to notify close contacts and cooperate with contract tracing by Public Health to limit the spread of COVID-19.

Contract tracing calls may be from Petersburg Public Health, Anchorage, or an out-of-state contracting company.

Asymptomatic testing will be available at PMC next door to Public Health on September 21 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and on September 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Travel testing is available at the PMC emergency room entrance Monday through Saturday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. at no charge

PMC encourages testing early even if only experiencing mild symptoms or if vaccinated because it is possible to be contagious before exhibiting symptoms.

All three vaccines are available at PMC, Public Health (907-772-4611) has Pfizer vaccines available and Rexall Pharmacy (907-772-3265) has a limited supply of the J&J vaccine available.

A third dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine is available only for people with significantly compromised immune systems.

Vaccines and tests can be scheduled by calling the COVID Information Line at 907-772-5788.
