LIZZIE THOMPSON / Petersburg Pilot count
On April 4, dozens of high school students holding up colorful signs that read "SUPPORT STUDENTS" and "FUND OUR EDUCATION" marched through downtown Petersburg. The high schoolers were participating in a statewide school walkout in protest of Alaska's recent legislative shortcomings for education. Gov. Mike Dunleavy vetoed a bipartisan bill that would have increased funding for education in Alaska for the first time since 2017, and legislators subsequently failed to override his veto. Concern for the district has grown among Petersburg High School students, who continue to raise their voices and call for support for public education in Alaska.
